How are they "stealing" it?

How is he stealing it? Do you know how? If your using wireless, you can encrypt your signal so that he'd need a password to access it.

The nieghbors close friend asked me if I have wireless dsl and I said no. Because I'm hard
wired through the phone line with filters and such. My modem has an antenna and a led
marked wireless that flashes so I said maybe I do and my connection seemed slower than
ever.
How can I encrypt the signal? I'm using a Westell Versa link model 327W? Any info would be helpful.
Thanks

Ok, quick googling shows that indeed this is an all-in-one model:
http://forum.linspire.com/viewtopic.php?t=...2b3d2cf81608b89

http://forums.techguy.org/networking/35274...tomatic+updates

Now, I think maybe if you navigate to http://192.168.1.1/ , you should be able to get to and change this. Check the manual that came with your Router/Modem, about particulars and default settings. You probably can even google it.

http://onlinehelp.verizon.net/consumer/bin...kStartGuide.pdf

don't know if that helps.

^ if that IP address works, I would change it to a custum address, also if that modem has a web interface, if that IP address works and you get your modems settings page, you should be able to see what computers are using it, so if there is another computer besides your own on that list you should then be able to block it.

If your not using the antenna yank it off. the cheapest way to fix this would be to either remove the antenna or cover it with something to weaken the signal, if you dont want wireless I would get rid of it, but more info would help.

I assume your talking about the modem given to you by your dsl providor (verison?) I would look at the manual and see if it has wireless or not (if there is an antenna its a good bet it does.) I'm sure there is a way to disable it, also if your sure your not using wireless read the manual it should say what the led light means (if it means there is activity or not, in which case if its showing activity someone is using it.)

Might wanna look into that on how to enable WEP Security. Or just fool around with the software that came with it and I'm sure you'll stumble upon it.

enable WEP 128bit security, change the SSID name to something unique, and then enable MAC adress filtering and tell the router/modem to only accept connection from your computers mac address.

or, see if there is a way to just turn off wireless brodcasting, if you dont have a wireless laptop or anything that uses it.

WEP is a joke if anyone is even mildly determined to steal your bandwidth, as is MAC filtering. IF you're not using it, best bet is to turn off wireless entirely. If you need 802.11, you can get routers with WPA that are a lot harder to crack.

^ in the real world, 128 bit security is getting old, but most people are not going to be able to crack it.

There is no sence bothering with enabeling security unless you know what your doing, best thing to do is just yank the antenna or turn of wireless all toghether (howver beating up the guy may help out)

yanking the antenna wont turn off the brodcast...lol. its best to either turn it off in the routers settings, or enable security if you need wireless access. 128bit is whats used evertime you send your credit card info over the net. its pretty secure. if a really skilled hacker REALLY wanted to get in, he might be able to do it, but it would be a royal pain in the ass. then he would get stoped by mac filtering, and would somehow have to find your mac address and spoof that as his own. all that trouble to get into your neighbours net access for free is not really worth it for any real hacker.

the people that steal your wirelss do it because they can. its like the front door of your house. if you leave it wide open, strangers will walk in, but if you lock it, it will keep people out. sure, you can pick the lock and get in, or break the door down, but most people wont bother with all that unless they are really trying to target you for a specific reason

just put a password on your wireless.

I agree completely with Lagos, i'm getting my degree in Network Security Managment unless someone has reasons other then checkin 6gc they won't bother hackin a 128bit encryption. 64 bit- u can crack easy but 128 takes one minute to long and any normal person would just look for another signal.

Word.

WEP uses a flawed algorithm, and can be cracked wide open on about 3 hours of traffic trace.

If you're not using the wireless, simply turn it off.

What Mr. E said is correct, imo. WEP is good enough to keep casual individuals from stealing your bandwidth, but it is easy to acquire a packet sniffer. After that, it is only a matter of time until your key is compromised. Any MAC address utilizing the network is also transmitted via packets, that can be filtered and spoofed pretty simply if the invader has the right hardware and/or software.

Older info, but still applicable
