for the past few months i've been playing with the backlighting on the climate contorl unit allot.

i think i found the best way to do it by making your own twist-in LEDs using the toyota bases and autolumination num74 LEDs.

after you insert them in, and get the polarity right the top one needs to be bent to the side to light up the top button row. and the ac light is really too dim (might be able to file down the side of the LED to get it's focus split though). but overall it's a very non-destructive way to do the cc unit and it looks pretty good.

Tell me if you find good inverted #74 leds.

For white or blue , you can try the PIAA 194 bulbs which breaks into 2x#74 leds but you would need a resistor for it. These are not really that cheap but its really bright.

I tried that and I wasn't satisfied. The way I did it was probably overkill but it looks damn fine.

One 5MM LED shaved to fit for indcators of each button.
One 5MM LED shaved to fit for backlighting of each button.
One 5MM LED in the center bulb socket.
One 194 "matrix" LED in the drivers side bulb socket modified to fit.

If I had access to 3mm LEDs I probably wouldn't have needed to shave the LEDs but that's all I could get at the time. Each LED got it's own resistor which, again, was probably overkill but I wanted everything to match perfectly.

Good luck with whatever you dicide to do.

P.S. you don't have to crush the glass in the 2nd step. Just straighten the wires and it will pull right out.

what about the resistor? LEDs can't handle 12v w/o a resistor

Each LED that took the place of a bulb got a resistor. The LEDs that replaced the stock LEDs didn't need one of course.

Oh. The autolumination 74 bulbs have the resistors built into them.

As far as pics go, I don't have any of the work that I did 'cause it wasn't to professional. I'm going to be opening it up again soon to do a few other tweeks so maybe I'll take some pics then.

when i put the 74 leds side by side from the oem leds....they dont look teh same to me....the oems are more flat...would a 3mm led fix this problem?....

With very minor filing, 3mm leds will fit in the black light tunnel. The type 74 leds were suggested to replace the 3 bulbs, not the indicator LEDs. I still think my way is the only way that looks perfect though.

The LEDs that only come on when the button is pressed do not need resistors. Any additional LEDs powered from a 12v source will need one resistor each unless you wire them in series. However I don't think that's going to be very easy considering the number of leds and the position of each.

If you follow the original instuctions of this post you buy 3 #74 12v leds and put them in the bulb holders. Then if you want the indicators to be blue as well you use 3mm blue leds to replace the green leds directly soldered to the board. Otherwise, you do what I said and put one led with a resistor to backlight each button and one led to replace each indicator led.
