Heeeelllllppppp!!!!!!, I am currently trying to change the outer boot on the passenger side drive axle or cv joint. The chilton manual says to remove the inboard boot and joint (Which I did) then remove the dynamic dampner, which I can't figure out how to get off for the life of me!! It is a metal cylinder with rubber inside it.
-Has anyone ever removed this dampner before... The toyota dealer didn't even know how to get it off!!!!




-But he did tell me the outboard cv joint should pound off, so I don't have to remove the dampner....
*However I tried this on the other axle and it didn't want to pound off????? Any ideas on how to do this? Is there a clip on the other side holding it on that I can't see????? This is on a 94 2.2 liter 5 speed celica....

usually it's the driver side which give everyone trouble. so are you basically trying to seperate the pass. side cv into two pieces so you can replace the boot. there is a bearing bracket holding the cv to the engine block take it off the two bolts and it will pop right off if you've already removed the axle nut. are you leaving the other part of the cv inside the tranny. that part is heild in by an angel clip just keep prying up on it make sure you don't screw up the axel seals inside the tranny where the cv goes into. just keep hacking it'll eventually give loose.

Actually I already have it out. my issue is with either pulling the outer cv joint itself to change it's boot or find a way to remove the dynamic dampner that is behind the boot preventing me from sliding it off backwards towards the inner joint... Anyone done this before???? Thankss.

1st cut the old boot off with a razor blade or something and remove the clamps that hold it on too. Then clean the grease out so you can see where the shaft goes into the joint. Now you need a vice, punch and hammer. Now put the axle in the vice clamping it so the out joint is pointing down and the vice is holding the axle by the shaft. Now you take the punch and hit the outer cv joint where the shaft goes into it, there should be 3 or 4 things that go out that the bearing sit in, don't hit on the ball bearings hit on the solid metal things next to the shaft. You have to hit it a few times really hard, we usually use a sledge hammer because of the extra force. The cv joint should pop off, if you break the circlip that hold the shaft on, you need a magnet to dig around inside the cv joint and make sure there are no pieces of it left in there before you put the new circlip on that should have come with your new boot. Anyway after that just put it back together the same way it came apart.

Just to let you guys know the dynamic dampener is merely pressed on and held in place by the rubber seal. If one were to spray WD-40 underneath the seal. it should slide off easily!!!! I tried pounding off the outside c.v. joint for about an hour with a 3 pound hammer. *It did not budge* ANd there was no way to release the clip holding it on, I couldn't get to it. So to save someone else the grief I went through if you can't get the outer cv joint off just remove the inner joint and the dynamic dampener!!!!!Thanks for the help!!!Guys....

Actually the fastest way is to just buy another reman-axel and save yourself the time and hassel.
