wow, this is some interesting info.....i was watching those videos that were posted a couple of days ago, with boss33s car, and dang it sounds so beautiful. Is it only cuz its a 3s, or it possible to achieve that sound with a gt sinse, the 3s is 2.0 liter, and gts are 2.2?
...I know theres alot more to it than that just liters but, just curious

I've heard plenty of Celica's with an ugly sound. Its not that uncommon. My cousin had one. Bought it from someone else like that.

I was just thinking, what is is that makes a car sound so crappy, like really the fart can mufflers.
I know of alot of cars that are fast as hell, and have all these mods, and they just sound soo ugly.
I mean its pretty common you see, or hear a honda fartin around your neighborhood, but if Im not mistaken our cars dont sound that way, and I have heard with many diff types of mufflers and exhausts.
Is there a certain cause for that sound....even some cars with good brand exhaust systems just dont sound right.
Im in the turboing process for my gt, and Im trying to avoid farts at all cost....lol wink.gif

it starts from the engine ... engines that rev over 7k rpm sound more like motorcycles .. our low reving engines sound better cause of this... so when adding an exhust system is just making that sound stronger what ever it is...

^ yeah, plus when you hear civics and stuff reving up all high and "ricey" its has to do with the fact people think that putting a huge exhaust system on a little motor give good gain. like slapping a 2.5 inch system with a big header on a little 1.5 ltr. the no-backpressure thing gives a horrible sound not to mention the backfire.

I have a rice can on my car, and i gata say I love the sound nice a deep with a good growell, but that my opinion.

hmm funny that. While I was reading this thread, some retard in a Lancer (and associated fullsik mods: altezza tails, chrome rims, ugly Droid bodykit, and cannon muffler!!!) just drove past and it sounded like shat.

man, i hate those civic's with the weed-eater sounding mufflers... mad.gif

...sorry for the pointless post...i just had to comment biggrin.gif

my best friend has a porsche 914 that sounds exactly like a lawn mower but could eat most cars alive.

i think A LOT of the way exhaust sounds is in direct corrolation with the size and type of the engine. but i also believe size of exhaust piping and type of muffler and or resonator play their role in sound.

thats not a backfire... that is excess fuel burning in the exhaust because it was not burned in the engine. all cars do it, but you dont here it on most stock cars because the exhaust is too restrictive.

Also the material that the exhuast is made of makes a difference - ie. thickness of material. It's to do with resonant frequencies.

There's a lot of cars out there that could smoke most everything on the street, and there's people out there that try to make themselfs feel better by saying they just sound like "rice." That way their slow cars with name brand exhausts with rich deap tones don't sound so stupid. I'm not meaning to be mean just for the sake of it, I just want people to give credit were it is due.

straight 6 woot woot..rb20det time for my 240!!

?
you have a RB in your 240?

very soon i will have one...and i would love to rb26, but u dont understand the work and money thats involved...first u need a custom drive shaft, rwd tranny of an rb25....the most elaborate downpipe if you want to keep both turbos..pluse the engine it self is close to 5k, and thats even shipped. not to mention you gonna need to fab up engine and tranny mounts...all in all, if u got the cash go for it, but the rb20 is 10x cheaper and 10x easier to install..u jus bolt up the k member, i can use my drive shaft..hell i could use my own tranny if i wanted, but it's not as strong..PLUSE, most parts like clutchs and things are that nature are the same as an n/a 300zx, so parts wont be that hard to find

ooooook here is what i learned and read on the subject... Long long time ago i was experimenting with all the tipes of mufflers / resonators.. I did 3 my own mufflers (straight trough design) and 3 resonators, all of them where different.

Basicly - the sound depends from whole system, if you have good flowing system and inside the pipes where are no sharp edges, no welding marks left - it will sound clean (no puf puf and no dra dra when you rev it and realise the gas pedal)

Second thing - Resonator / Muffler ( when they are the straight through design), the size / diameter of them will make your sound either risey or a nice deep tone. The Diameter will deside what tone your sound will be the bigger diameter and short lenght will give you higher pitch sound, cuz the big bang will be slowed down but all the small ding ding sounds will be left untouched. The smaller diameter and longer ones will give you a loud but clean deep tone cuz all the small pitching will be damped and deep but loud sound will go out.. The combination of these two parameters will give you desired sound.. When going custom it all depends on the design of these 2...

Why do you think Greddy SP sounds so damn good? take a look at the rear muffler - the size of it is almost the same as Stock one, and the resonator is almost the same too.

In this case - size matter - but matter only if you want to quiet down the sound, but queting the sound - means slowing donw the exhaust gases... so... it is for you to chose.

Best exhaust - straight pipe of 1 meter long and some sort of funnel type tip on the end... Sound will be amazing biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

It also makes a difference how many valves per cylinder an engine has, 4 valve engines alyways have a higher pitched note compared to 2 valve. My 18rg and 2tg celicas sound heaps deeper and gruntier compared to the 5s

Huge. You can run open down pipe and you will be able to drive and sound wount be so damn huge. Turbo cuts away about 50 - 70% of sound, cuz it slows down the gases.

My friend has a RB26 in his s13. Single turbo, 4inch exhaust from front to back(straight), experimental engine and trans mounts, AEM standalone coustom tuned. It took him 8 months from start 2 finish including tuning time. He runs 12.8s, but hez got mad boost leak. Hez sellin his car soon for $21K soon, hopefully.
