right now i have a 94 toyota celica with a 2.2l 5sfe engine. would it be better to rebuild and put a new head on the 5sfe or to buy a 3sgte engine and do a complete engine swap. i have an auto. tranny right now and eventually i want to change that to manual so take that into consideration also. the main thing i want is to turbo my car and i know you can turbo a 5sfe but is it real spendy or nothin compared to a whole new engine. also can you put a 3sge head on a 5sfe engine to upgrade the engine. thanks for the help

A turbo 5sfe is a budget build choice. It's also simpler due to it being the same engine. You can peice together parts instead of getting everything at once. There's a few guys out there with turboed 5sfe's pushing really good numbers. 3sgte, is a great motor, but it's a big project. You can put a 3s head on a 5s, but it won't do much do to 5sfe's stroke. It limits high rev hp. Start small, get the hang of your car, then do what you need to do.

if u feel that ur financially ready to do the 3sgte swap (it can get pricey for some kindasad.gif ) and u feel that u have good maintenance habits (3sgte is f/i and like all other turbo cars comes with higher maintenance needs than n/a motors)...then sure go for it !!!

if not then there are other options...a turbo setup for the 5sfe can also be reliable assuming ur current motor is healthy and u do everything right, a 3rd gen 3sge swap as ive recently read is easier to swap into a GT than the 3sgte/beams, or u can be unique and swap in a 2zzge!!! wink.gif (read the 7th gen motor in a 6th gen thread)

bboy, its not any harder or easier. its pretty much the same amount of work.

6G94celica, you get a 3sgte recomendation from me.

From what I've read, this is accurate. It's not much harder or easier. It's easier to put in a GT than ST. So it's a better option than a 4age. The 2zzge is in debate. It's one of the most exciting things to happen on this site since.... I don't know what it compares to, but I'm excited.

3sgte hands down. if you want to rebuild and turbo your existing setup properly its price would be comparable to the swap. in the long run, 3sgte will be more reliable since it was designed for boost. also since you want to swap trannies makes it an even easier decision.

I think Bigfoot is blurry, that's the problem. It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry. And that's extra scary to me, because there's a large, out-of-focus monster roaming the countryside.

From what your saying I would recommend you go straight with the 3sgte swap.
If you do take the 5sfte route, it will only be a matter of time before you go
with the 3sgte swap. Even Manny would agree with this. It is only a matter of time
before the 5sfte gives up on you.
So I would say save up till you can get the motor and manual tranny, and go for it smile.gif
You'll save more money at the end of it.

I'm also having a similar question running through my head too. Cuz right now I'm running with the 7afe and I'm not sure if I should swap with the 5sfe or the 3sgte. And if I was to do the 3sgte what all would I need for the swap? Especially how it'll be running FWD. Guys help me out here! kindasad.gif

Dude my name is Chucky too.... weird tongue.gif As for the swap, if I were you I would go with the 3sgte. Like said before, it is more worth it than the 5sfe in the long run. Just off the top of my head you will need the ECU and tranny for the 3sgte. A lot of people use v6 Camry trannys I believe. There are plenty of threads about it so just search for them and you will find all the info you need. The FWD isnt a problem for the 3sgte, plenty of people have swapped it into the FWD celicas and it works just fine. But once again just search and you find all you need to know about the 3sgte swap. There is even a sticky about it.

if you need to ask opinions on a 135hp econo engine, and a 225hp performance engine, IMO your not ready for a 3s.
