Why does it seem like front mount intercoolers are more popular these days?
I personally like Air to Water Intercoolers more, just because you can always dump in dry ice into the water and have a great intercooler efficency. Why don't more poeple use AWIC? What other car manuactures make AWIC other then the gt4? what's wrong with the cheap ebay ones? Ebay awic item #: 8036625491 can someone tell me a little more about AWIC systems? well, theres lots of reasons why, but IMO alot of it has to do with setup, and just more parts to worry about.
now, dont take that as me saying W2A is bad, cause thats not what im saying at all, in fact, I personally LOVE the idea of a good W2A setup. its just basicly the fact of a FMIC usually being easier and cheaper. -------------------- Former Team 5SFTE pro member ;)

awic's are so efficient on our gt fours and with thermal isolation can be used up to 400bhp. i changed it because i need more power.

my other reason i like water to air intercoolers is because you can move more of the weight to the center of the car.
with the heavy turbo mounted on the exhaust manifold and then adding more pipes infront of the front axels. this makes the car too front heavy. My plans, if they ever happen, is to mount the battery and the water reservor in the back behind the back seats to help balance the car out. the W/A intercooler will be mounted right next to the firewall. |

The weight your talking is negligable, no it wont help traction your talking a few pounds here. Then on top of that if you switch the resovoir to the back you now have to have a more powerful pump because now your doing an unnecessarily long piping system with even MORE water which is even MORE weight.
Leave the stuff in the front. -------------------- |

Yeah... I dont think you understand how intercoolers work.
Air to air (ie FMIC) are cooled by air passing thru the core in which the compressed air is passing inside the core. The moving air cools the fins & metal and heat is dispersed from the hot air to the metal which is cooled via the moving air. In a water to air intercooler, instead of air cooling the metal, water is cooling the metal. There is no direct contact between the compressed air and the water (as also like the a2a). Water to air intercoolers are more effective in the way that water is a better cooling agent than air is. -------------------- |

Thanks, I do understand how they work, but when looking at 3sgte's with AWIC, it seems like they fit directly from the turbo to the intake
so therefore I wasn't sure if a BOV could be placed. Rob |

Well for anybody whose generally confused about intercoolers.
And what do you mean directly from the turbo to the intake? Intake is before the turbo, then the intercooler is after the turbo then throttle body. The bov is between the intercooler and compressor. -------------------- |

Thanks, that pic helps!
I originally meant that the AWIC seemed to provide a direct flow of air form the turbo to the intake manifold, meaning no additional bent pipes anywhere to tap in a BOV, but the pic clears things up Thanks, Rob |

QUOTE What other car manuactures make AWIC other then the gt4? The best water / air IC's in my opinion are Spearco. But they are quite expensive. PWR makes a decent one too from what I've heard. I love my water/air setup. Wouldn't trade it.... -------------------- Scott

From the EPC picture I'd say you can't buy it separately, it's one assembly. Can't find it in the EPC either, it's just sold as one assembly.

The part no. from the pump is 16290-74030 but it didnt come up with anything at toyotaworld.com, but I can make a bracket for it if everything else fails. -------------------- 98% completion --- aaRon |
