the half the hp theory is bull****, some of the 185 trannies have a awd/fwd switch which disables the transfercase gear and like kwanza said theyre similiar trannies with the exception of the transfer case. now it has been said this is not safe for the tranny and should be used only for diagnostics. but as i see it the only way it can fail is if you are driving and the switch mentioned slips from fwd to awd while driving could be what does the harm. if somebody would like to prove me wrong then show some facts or some live testing (i have a 185 tranny i can test if it really comes down to it) atleast something will be accomplished.

stop me if this is a stupid idea, but i think if i were you I would buy the awd tranny w/ the engine, then just pull the tranny, sell it, and pick up the mr2 fwd. no?

On the MR2 tranny there is also the issue of the custom rear tranny mount (the one to the rear of the car). The stock GT one does not fit and the stock MR2 one does not fit either. Saynug and I made one for his car at my shop but it took a few hours of cutting up the two stock mounts and welding certain peices back together and some custom stuff on top of that. In the end it worked great but it's not very feasible for someone who does not have the benifit of having a fab shop to go to for free shop time and labor.
The MR2 tranny is the best way to go though. Try to make sure you get the one with LSD - some don't have it ('90-'92 i believe though I could be wrong about the years). And make sure it is the Turbo one - the N/A one will be the same as your stock tranny but with the headache of the rear mount problem. Saynug and I did his. It really was no sweat for us but of curse he's a tech at a Toyota dealership and I have a machine shop where I can make just about anything custom. It'd be a lot harder for the average person. I'm pretty sure there are quite a few other people on here that have done this.
