Thank god for non-interference engines.
I assume it was either an A. defective belt or B. not installed properly, as it only had 25,000 miles on it. You guys think I should take it back to the mechanic that did it and demand he fix it for free? That would present a towing issue, granted, as he's an hour away; whereas there's another shop at the bottom of my block that I could literally push the car to. At least I know why my car is not starting now. |

if you take it back to that guy he's gonna look @ u funny, as it was 25k ago. you COULD take it back to him but he's most likely not gonna fix it for free.

Yea, probably not.
I had a mechanic try to tell me today that it was an interference engine. I called him on his bull**** "well I'm just going by what the manual says". He's just an asshole trying to make some extra cash off a college kid. For a non-interference engine, it sure did make an ungodly clanking sound when it broke. eep... |

I feel dumb, I didn't even know our engine were non-interferance. My uncle was telling me we would have to rebuild it if the timing belt broke. He's such a retard. lol. Actually, he's one of the smartest guys I know machanicly, I have no idea how he missed that one.

Actually, he's one of the smartest guys I know machanicly, I have no idea how he missed that one. It's well documented all over the internet that the 5S is non-interference (with the occasional idiot thinking it is). To be certain I talked to my good friend who is a certified toyota mechanic. He said it was non-interference. Then he double checked by asking two toyota master mechanics, both of which said, with quote "110% certainty" that the 5S is non-interference. I feel like an idiot now. There was squeaking from my engine for quite a few weeks... I just thought it was something along the serpetine belt... now I'm suspecting the tensioners for the timing belt may be what failed... we will see. Ironic... the day it failed I was going to a friends to have him help me install a head I rebuilt on the engine (fresh valve seals, P&P and cam regrinds)... god doesn't want me to have performance. |

They are indeed non-interference. The diesel version the 2.2L is interference, maybe that caused a mix up.

He doesn't use the internet for anything. He just works on the cars and learns from experiance. I've tried to introduce him to the wonderful world of internet forums. This is the next best thing to actually doing something. But real experiance is the best thing.

I'm still worried... the engine sure did clank and slam when it died for not being interference. Any of the guru's want to explain this one? Any possible way a non-interference engine could bend valves, etc, from a timing belt breaking?

Any of the guru's want to explain this one? Any possible way a non-interference engine could bend valves, etc, from a timing belt breaking? Well, you've got a chunk of rubber slamming around in the timing belt cover so that could very well have been the noise you heard. There is no way to bend a valve in a non-interference engine without the introduction of a foreign object or severe lack of lubrication and even then I would think something else would fail first. -------------------- Project ST204.5 99.88946% complete... |

Well you can change the belt and have them do a compression test, if you fail the compression test you probably have some sort of valve damage. Even though the valves should clear the cylinders, doesnt mean there isnt other damage. But before you go ahead and crack the head open replace the belt and do a compression test.

I didn't break the timing belt... but spun a rod bearing.... but after our lower engine rebuild it sounds like a valve or valves may be making noise.. .any possiblity they could have been damaged?

I would take it to the shop you had do it. They just might on their reputation fix it for you.
I had removed my pinstripes and found that the body shop in 1998 never fixed the old one but just painted over top of it and then cover it with the new one. They removed it for free. That was a 6 year difference from when it was done and when it was fixed. Give it a shot and see what they do. -------------------- hows it taste motha f*cka

My dad and uncle hate when people pull this trick. I don't hear people do it much with my dad, but they should. He's lazy sometimes and doesn't do as good a job, he owns a body shop. But my uncle, who has a machanics shop, he does great work. People will drive their cars for a year or more, and then something breaks and they go around telling everyone it was something he did. So then he's forced to fix it just to shut them up. Even though he didn't do anything. And truste me, I believe in real quality service and honesty, my uncle hardly ever messes up. When he does, he admits it. He's only had major problems with one family though. -------------------- Live Free, Be Happy

QUOTE(Sev408 @ Feb 22, 2006 - 3:53 PM) thats not what i said^^ and well your dad deserves it if he doesnt do a good job. i said to take it back, because if its an obvious error on their part then they can fix it. are you telling me that my pinstrip was magically altered by the forces of nature and not by the shop who did it cheaply. (im not claiming you said this, just an example) Wow, so i guess ill never take my car to have your dad work on it, if something ever broke and i couldnt fix it. i recommend you fix your post, cause it sounds like your father does have ass work. Wow, I don't like what you saying to me at all. I was saying my dad doesn't do the best job, but most people who go to him know how he does and go to him anyway. He's very cheap. He can do a great job if he wants. He used to do a lot of custom work, and he still does a few restores. He says most of the people who come in are just insurance jobs that the people don't care about their cars, and it's true. This allows people to keep most of the money the insurance company gives them, so they're happy. I'm not one to go saying mean things, but please don't assume things like I'm saying you stripe "Magically altered by the forces of nature and not by the shop." I hope you edit your post to not sound so mean. I think what you said was completely uncalled for. It upset me. I would also suggest slowing down and thinking about what you’re saying, and trying to control your self in the future. EDIT: You completely missed my point by the way. Your motor should be ok. I broke my belt too. You main concern should be why it broke to prevent it from happening again. I did my install myself. Its alot of work, but its not hard at all.

There are some UNINFORMED toyota dealerships out there. I'm quote-shopping for a timing belt replacement.
"Toyota Celica" "Is that a 4 or 6 cylinder, sir?" God. You aren't getting my business. next Toyota dealership... "Would you happen to know if it's an interference or non-interference engine?" "Whaa? Uh... let me check (he's clueless)... yeah... it's interference." Wrong again. Not getting my business. The lowest quote I found so far is 170 bucks. |
