Alright so my friend is wanting to do a 5sfe to 3sgte engine swap in his gt... so before we get started on anything i had a question about the 3sgte head gasket...

I currently have a 87 toyota supra and the head gasket is the hole in our armor so to speak...

i dont know how much boost we are planning on running with the 3sgte but with the engine out it would be alot easier to do a head gasket swap...

but my question is how much boost can a stock hg hold?

9ish. I wouldnt change the HG unless you plan on changing all the internals and do a complete rebuild. I think you should be good to the point the stock internals would be a concern.

the 3sgte dosnt have headgasket issues like the 87 supra did. so dont worry about changing it. i think most mr2 guys report the stock head gasket giving out around 300-400hp, so you have nothing to worry about. the stock turbo runs at about 10psi and you can turn the boost up to 15psi . there is pretty much no risk of blowing the stock HG on the stock turbo.

My friend has a N/A 86.5 supra @ 9.2:1 compression. Then he threw a CT-26 on it and ran 7psi of boost successfully for about 5000 miles. Then he got greedy and upped the boost to 11psi. That lasted for less than 1000 miles before the headgasket blew. Close to 300 wheel horsepower and 350 ft-lbs of torque was fun while it lasted.

it wasnt that they were bad gaskets it was because they were poorly torqued down at the factory... if they would have been torqued right they wouldnt have blown...

but anyways thanks for the replies we shall leave the hg alone

i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this.
