Is there any difference in the 5sfe heads? I have a 94 and the one I'm looking to buy shows 97 and up. Its the non cali style.

There's I believe 3 revisions.
Revision 1 is the earliest 5S-FE head (90-92 MR2, 90-92 Camry, 90-92 Celica). The camshafts (smaller base circle) and valves (shorter stems) are different as well as the valve cover. Revision 2 is 93 MR2, 94-99 Celica, 93-97 Camry. It is the same as what you have now. Larger base circle on the cams, longer valve stems, different valve cover. Revision 3 is 98-01 Camry and Solara. It is the same as the 94-99 Celica with the exception of having a provision for a cam sensor. The camshaft sprocket on those has a tooth, and the metal timing cover is different to accommodate the sensor. This is because this 98-01 engine (cali or federal) comes with a distributorless ignition. -------------------- 1993 Celica GT Coupe - sold

I wonder if I get that head how hard it would be to swap it over to a distributorless motor. I hate the distributor.

I wonder if I get that head how hard it would be to swap it over to a distributorless motor. I hate the distributor. Converting to a distributorless setup is relatively easy. However controlling it is another story. You'd be better off getting an EMS to control fuel/spark and leaving the stock ECU to control everything else. Unless you manage to retrofit a m/t Solara harness and ECU into the Celica. For the distributorless ignition you need: 1. Crank timing gear from 98+ engine 2. Oil pump with crank sensor provision from 98+ engine 3. Crank sensor from 98+ engine 4. Head from 98+ engine 5. Cam sensor and bracket from 98+ engine 6. Distributor block-off plug 7. Coil packs from 98+ engine 8. Wiring harness and ECU from 98+ engine Might as well get a 98+ engine, harness and ECU altogether. -------------------- 1993 Celica GT Coupe - sold

The distributor mounting bolt holes are there because the coil packs use them.

I have a 94 GT with a motor from a 97+ camry in it, it works but they had to Aztec Engineer the bell housing
![]() but it still has a federal emission distributor on it, and the crank sensor wire just hangs there, no need to plug it in. This post has been edited by VavAlephVav: May 10, 2014 - 1:39 PM -------------------- Bust a Deal; Face the Wheel.

That's because the Camry doesn't have the same flywheel inspection cover, because the oil pan is different. Bolts up the same, but since this engine has balance shafts (which I removed) the oil pan has an extra "lump" to accommodate the huge shaft assembly. QUOTE Anyone know if the 1st gen and 2nd gen cams are interchangeable? Rev 2 and Rev 3, yes. Rev 1 and Rev 2, no. The base circle is smaller on the Revision 1 5SFE cams, which means that if you had a 91 head you could send in a set of cams from a 93+ engine and have them simply reground, no need for welding on most grinds. (hint hint) Revision 1 is identifiable by the intake manifold and valve cover they are usually attached to, plus you'll only find them from old 90-92 MR2s in the US, and a few old Camry.
