Please set up some sort of subscription service so that we don't need these ads at the bottom of each topic. I'd be willing to pay so that I won't be bombarded by useless crap. Ads are so tacky and cheap looking. What kind of revenue do you make from those ads anyway? I'm sure our contributions (if they were allowed) would be significantly more. Sorry, I hate ads almost as much as I hate spam.

I've been working on a potential subscription sort of setup, but it is going to cost me money initially(that I don't have,) and will require a significant amount of time(that I also don't have.) Hopefully I'll be able to get it done by the end of the month(no school over spring break,) but until then, the ads aren't too big of a deal. They fund the site's hosting and do very little to affect load time, even though they may not be very attractive. If you go to almost any website(or if you watch tv, go outside your home, read a magazine, etc.), you'll see advertisements of some sort...it's just something that you should learn to live with...at least for a bit until I can get the subscription thing setup. Just be glad the website is free and there are no pop-ups or slow image/flash-based ads and things like that.

I don't mind the criticism Jay...it's good to know exactly what people think about various parts of the site. I just shot off another email to my host...I'll see what they say. I think it'll require the move to a dedicated server(read: $$$) though. -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

Damn, I just re-read that... I do sound like a whiney cry-baby. lol. Sorry 'bout that.
I guess when you put it in perspective this is still one of the most unintrusive advertisement implementations that I've seen. I commend you on that. I was just hoping for an alternative and an opportunity to contribute. I'll pay for a proper search function with three letter word searches too. -------------------- Project ST204.5 99.88946% complete... |

I'm going to have to agree. I pay for a subscription to Offtopic.com and would pay instantly here. Coomer I would be MORE than happy. And we all know this has been discussed a million times.

Downward spiral. I don't care how you justify it, that's exactly what it is. First it's this, then something else, then something else. Little changes that people don't really notice, then pretty soon, it's a ton of spam. Feel free to prove me wrong. I've got to say, this is the first time I've considered the fact that this site might not still be around when I graduate.

So by your argument, every website with advertising is heading in a downward spiral? I think it's more like the opposite, for good sites anyway. Ads create revenue, which I plan to use to upgrade to a dedicated server. Upgrading to the dedicated server means users will be able to upload their own personal files in posts, possibly get their own @6gc.net email addresses, search with 3-letter words, enjoy increased performance, etc. I don't even see where spam comes into the equation at all either. -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

I was pretty upset when I seen these things at first. I typed a little out of control. I'm still worried about this site going downhill. I like things really simple. I do agree that good sites have nice options. All I need from here is place to talk about my car and whatever else comes up. This site has had that since I joined. It might not be as bad as I think. Probably isn't. -------------------- Live Free, Be Happy

You should have just said you were kidding. I had a perfectly good lie going for you and you screwed it up.

QUOTE(Batman722 @ Mar 2, 2006 - 12:09 AM) kinda un related, but Bulldog, what do you think is going downhill about the site in general ? Everyone is loosing their cars, or loosing interest. So many members it's hard to keep as close nit community. Good bit of fighting, and non communal actions. New people who bought Celica's are more often younger people who just trash them. There just doesn't seem to be as much love as there was. But maybe it's just me and I'm just depressed at the distance between me and my dreams right now. Mostly, just the bigger the site gets, the less personal it is. There still are good members on here. Like I said, I'm just in a different mood, so it's not as bad as I thought. I'm just trying to express my feelings at the time. Jay, I know it would have been better if I lied, but I just can't do that. Lieing never gets you anywere. It's one of my policies. -------------------- Live Free, Be Happy

The site just seems shady to me. Some of the members are just repulsive. Too many high school 'tables at lunch' kind of groups running around.

New people who bought Celica's are more often younger people who just trash them. i think thats one of the reason we need to keep this site open and free for everyone by simply allowing a few ads. As new people get celicas they come to the site and find the more tasteful ways of modding them. If this site was a subcription service, they probably wont join and end up "trashing" them like you say. I think only the established regulars would pay for the service of the site, and then it would become too elite hoarding our secrets and car info for ourselves rather than passing it out to everyone, sharing information as the internet is intended. You cant help people getting rid of their car, no one keeps one car forever no matter how much we would want to. And as one gets deeper and deeper into the hobby of tuning, it is only natural to move on to another platform that is more condusive to it. -------------------- Its Orville's Celica, i just drive it... |

Is there any way to filter out certain advertisers? I thought that this company was pretty much a giant scam:

Persistant bastard!!! lol I would love 3 letter word searching. I kind of agree on the clique thing. And I'm most likely placed in a clique of some sort, but i think that will happen anywhere at anytime... The people who have been here a long time tend to become closer. The people who live closer become closer... Thats just life. But I do not understand the "all the younger kids are gettin the cars and trashing them" You are not old yourself and the celica was never meant as a top notch sports car, with age it loses value... no one is deliberately trashing their cars, you should know that -------------------- |
