well, me and a friend (who also has a 6gc) were going down the free way.
i decided to just gun it for a second or so and he said that once i gunned it that a smell came to him (he was right behind me,) and he's thinking that its gas. i have a full exhaust (2.25 header -> 2.25 exhaust) and im just wondering what you think it might be.

5sfe runs rich at high rpms I do believe. Easy way to fix it is to unplug the o2 senser that goes in the top exhaust manifold. This tricks the car into running a little lean. It'll work 50% of the time. It'll probably make the CEL come on too. Very very cheap way of doing it. I've heard that safc2 is one of the best mods for a NA 5sfe. That, header, exhaust, intake, and porting.

Maybe. The only way to find out is to try it. I'm sorry for assuming. Anytime anyone asks a question about something like that, I assume 5sfe. They're what I know, as compared to 7afe. I'm not saying I know alot about the 5sfe, just more. I can tell you that because they have the same fe head, that the upgrades will help out the same. I'm not positive on that. As far as the O2 thing, that's a really iffy thing to do. It doesn't work all the time. It's just something to try and maybe play with. You'll never know till you try it. And, my guess is, if you'll try something like that, you're not going to go to a dyno. So, you just have to rely on feel to know if it's working.

don't remove an o2 sensor its not a smooth thing to play with...
telling someone to pull their o2 sensor could lead to them bombing a motor under your advice holding you responsible...

best way to find out is to get your car to a dyno and have the A/F graphed that way you will LEARN if your actually running rich or not

7afe motors have a habit of burning oil and shooting smoke out teh tail

How could pulling the plug on an o2 senser blow the motor? It's not going to do that much. It will most likely make the CEL come on. I ran my car like that for about 6 months, nothing ever happend to it.

making a car run lean and providing inaccurate information to the ECU could over time make detonation and various issues...just cover you butt and be safe...not all engines are the same each one is different and reacts in different ways

I really don't think it leans it out enough to cause problems. I guess, if you really want to be careful, it's something you shouldn't do. But if your going to push your car to the rpms that this would actually be effective, you're not being to careful. I only noticed a gain from 5K up.

well... if the 7afe is just common to burning oil and shooting stuff out the tail then i should just ignore it :-P. i should take it a dyno and take a look at my afr... and i should invest in a safcii - i heard i would probably benefit from getting that.

That's definately the best idea. SAFC2's are great investments. I wish I could get to a dyno to have one tuned. I'd get one if I could hook that up.

Retard the timing by 5 Degrees, it should solve your problem.

How do I do that on my 5sfe? I didn't think this was possible due to electronicly controlled.
