Hello I just bought a 94 GT celica and have noticed what I believe is lifter/rocker noise or tapping sound.
At first I thought it was an exhaust leak or rattle but that doesn't seem to be the case.

-So my motor has 132,000 miles on it. How often are the liftters/rockers supposed to be adjusted?

-*Do these motors usually have noisy lifters/rockers?* I had 4 different Isuzu 4cylinder motors with adjustable
rocker arms and they all had a tapping noise no matter what condition they were in. I guess it was common occurrence with those motors...

Do you have a digital camera with a video option? Maybe a vid clip would help us out.

Sorry I don't have an audio clip, However it does it all the time at startup, after driving it, etc.
-I believe it increases when the engine rpm increases. but it does not get louder, just increases in speed.

-I can't hear it inside the car.

-But you can outside the car with the hood down and it is louder with it up.

-I will investigate more tomorrow.

-So there is nothing to adjust on these motors like rockers on the valves? I am new to this style of engine so any info. is great. Thanks...

there are no rockers, but there are shims for the valves. you can take off the valve cover and check the shim spec with a feeler gauge.

get youself a car stethoscope at your local car parts store and start poking around. a lot of the times, what you think is engine noise, might be something else.

I assume your spark plug failed? or did something go internally on the motor that caused this ? Sounds like there may be a story here? Thanks...

i once had a problem like that with my car. Sounded like a loud rattling noise coming from my engine, but anywho, after some investigating, i found out that it was my torque converter, and that the only to fix it, was to replace my whole
tranny.

Try tightening all your spark plugs. A loose spark plug will make a tapping sound.

I have a sound like that right now... I've rebuilt my engine (after spinning a rod bearing) and it sounds like a lifter might be sticking.. The best guess i've heard right now is because my new bearings aren't spaced right (new bearings with wear on crankshaft) so its taking more oil than normal.. so my lifters are getting less oil so they are making a noise... i'm gonna try a thicker oil to see if that helps...

but if anyone knows of a way to make this noise go away.. please let us know!!!

Yes I was also thinking of running 10w-30 castrol synthetic blend *thicker oil* as that oil has done wonders for me on other motors. Currently I bought the car with 5w-30 pennzoil motor oil which i am not a fan of....

jaws.... engine noises can be caused by a lot of things. sometimes the noise can come from something bolted to the engine, and not inside it. unless you have a video clip of it, along with VERY detailed description of how it sounds, whent you hear it most, etc... then its very difficult to just guess over the net.

Alright how about this. To those with the "noise coming from engine" problems, how does your car dirive when driven, if you can even drive it. Also, is there smoke coming out of the exhaust ( ex. white smoke). what have you done to your engine to cause a problem like this.......if you can give descriptions based on info seomwhat close to this, then maybe itll be alot easier for ppl, to help you. Just like others have said with out "DETAILED" descriptions its kinda hard to help.
