these are the valve stem seals, cheap part, but lots of labor.

some people have used oil additives to stop it, like those stop leak things found at autozone.

its not a big problem, other than being annoying.

you dont need to "fix" it, but if you want , try some of the autozone oil additive called stopleak, it will tell you on the back how it conditions valves, etc.

other than that, you have to open up the head to fix it, so its just not worth it, its not detrimental to your engine, its jsut burning off a tad of oil when you start.

I wouldnt use any additives i'd try a thicker oil (10w-40) and see how that works for you.

I had the same problem with my 7A-FE (different engine i know) and i did 2 things that seemed to fix it.

1. i sucked auto trans fluid into my intake manifold with a vacuum line then let it sit 12 hours and then started the car, warmed it, and drove it hard up and down the street, racing the engine up and down through 1st gear several times.

2. drove 20 hours on the highway in one week

either one of those could have resoftened the seals and allowed them to seal once more, im not sure which did it. try the trans fluid thing and then do some extended highway driving and see if that helps, its alot cheaper and easier than going through replacing the seals.

additionally, i run 1/2 quart of trans fluid (added to my oil) through the engine for 50-100 miles before an oil change. the 1st time i did this was the last oil change and the oil came out a horrid varnish brown (still smelled like trans fluid). trans fluid in the oil is a pretty well known trick to quickly and easily clean out an engine.

you dont need to "fix" it, but if you want , try some of the autozone oil additive called stopleak, it will tell you on the back how it conditions valves, etc.

if you dont fix it
1. excessive carbon buildup
2. oil fouled plugs

that "stop leak" just swells seals and gaskets and isnt good for them.

how many mile do you have on your car?

the bad news is, that in order to fix it, you have to take the whole head of and you are talking about BIG money and lots of laybor.

the good news is, that this is the most common problem with the celica motors and dosnt cause any harm tot he life of your engine. just ignore the puff of smoke and keep an eye on your oil level and youll be just fine without any problems.

the safest thing to do, would be to try changing to thicker oil like 10w30 and see if that helps.
