My last oil change was done at the dealership. So today I went out to change my oil and everything was going smooth until I hit the filter. SOMEONE at Toyota must not have been paying attention when they said "Don't Screw on the filter like you're Rambo". So I reach up to get it, no luck. Reach Down to get it. No luck there. I got out one of those oil filter wrenches, but it couldn't shrink enough to fit. I sit in my garage pondering how to do this. I go and search the tool bench for something useful, and I stumble upon a good friend...Sandpaper. I ripped off a piece and went to the filter again. After a few twists the filter buckled like an 8 year-old girl. The world was saved and the filter was removed and banished to the deep layers of hell.
Moral of the story- If you ever are having troubles getting off your oil filter, use sandpaper. It works. -------------------- 1991 MR2 - T-tops - Crimson Red - Gen3 3SGTE - Lots of money

yep, sandpaper is an old trick. the 1st time i changed my oil i had a heck of a time and grabbed it hard as i could with some leather gloves. the fram filters (12 came with the car when i bought it) have a textured surface on the end which makes grip really easy.
another trick is to just shove a screwdriver through the filter body and use that for leverage. -------------------- |

Funny, I've never had a problem with my filter, yet when I changed my oil yesterday it took me a good 20 minutes to get the drain nut loosened.

Toyota filters once you put it on and the engine gets hot the filter will get stuck there tight. Thats what my friend told me because he changes oil at toyota dealerships. I had some problem when my friend did my gf's 97 collora and i was like damn why you got to put it on so tight dumbass, now i can't take it off. But he told me it was toyota's filters. Its like that. Good luck trying to take that filter out. |

I've always avoided that problem by putting a little bit of oil on the seal around the filter. But, I did have that problem when changing the oil in my car the first time (last week. just got my celi). I wonder if my usual trick will work with this car? Only time will tell...

I think it is a well known rule to coat the O-ring with oil before putting it on. I don't know if the guy at the dealership did that though. Never taking my car back there again. -------------------- 1991 MR2 - T-tops - Crimson Red - Gen3 3SGTE - Lots of money

yea, you put oil on the rubber to keep it from binding and bunching and not making a seal. i also prefill my filter partially before i start my change so that when i goto put it on its already partially filled with oil, its easier on the engine for that first crank after the change. it'll get the new oil moving faster since you dont have to fill a filter 1st before the oil gets to where it needs to be.

I work at a toyota dealership and all the filters we put on are snug not over tightened. We always use those "sockets" to get the filter of because when they heat up they get tighter.
All the filters from toyota also come pre lubed with a little wrapper on the end. |
