Hey i was wondering, i have a 5s-fe engine in my car, is it worth it to make it a good nautually aspired enigine or should i just save up for a 3s-gte. I can do all the engine work myself i am a toyota mechanic. I was just wondering from other people if they thought i should go all out with this engine or just do the the swap. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

i'll agree thats there not alot you can do NA. if your car has an adjustable distributor you can advance the timing a little for a small increase in torque and a shift in the power band to the mid/lower rpm range. its not a large increase and you'll want to run a slightly higher octane fuel after you do this.

another possibility is to get NA tuned with a safc or similar device, that with a header could pickup a few hp/tq in addition to the timing.

a guy on celicatech once tried to built an all-motor 5s-fe, results were very disapointing. The head design just doesn't flow enough I heard.

i would swap it...even i have 5s-fe engine with ram intake in it but add little power to it...plus it's an economy engine so definite a swap for you.

theres always the hybrid 5s-gte or whatever. 3s head on a 5s block to make a 2.2L turbo motor.

Go with a 3rd generation 3sge. That's a good motor for a NA build. 5sfe can be a fun little toy, but it will never be a serious motor. I'm working on some things right now. Check my profile for my mods, I still can't outrun anyone on a strate strech. But, if you want a NA motor, like me, strate stretch isn't what you care about.

The 5SFE only does what it does,
makes lots of torque down low, at the top it just chugs,
you cannot change that, it's simply the way
for +displacement 4 bangers hurt horsepower's displays.
not can be done to change it... it's gay.

How to make horsepower out of a four,
simply put, put the pedal to the floor.
what does this mean, why you says what you says?
Simple, I answer, horsepower needs revs.
Although much torque the 5SFE has, can't eat your cake then take it to bed.

why na youll get nowhere. Well it depends on what you want to do. Youll end up spending alot more on an na setup than you would with a turbo setup and get better results... also depending on what you want. 5sfe makes low end power but once it gets to about 5k rpms it just craps it self. Its an economy motor.....

hasnt there been an issue with the 3s blocks cracking between cyl 2/3 due to the water in the small passage between the 2 boiling and that one spot getting too hot? i remember there was a thread about that on mr2oc board. i think the solution was a 2nd electric pump to increase flow and/or a higher PSI cooling system.
