3sgte Post Swap Starter Problem Solved, She's Alllive! Options

As some of you know I took the 3sgte set up from a working 6gc (originally manual) and swapped it into my 6g (automatic). When the wiring harness was made, it was intended for a manual and not for an automatic transmission. For those of you that have automatic transmissions and want to do a 3sgte + manual tranny swap, this is for you.

So after calling Dr. Tweak, he suggested the following:

"Near the ECU, there is the II2 connector, and on pin 18 of the car's connector side, you'll find a black wire with a yellow stripe. That wire needs to be connected to a black wire that comes from pin 2 of the starter relay, you can probably find this wire by looking under the relay box and/or using the ohm-meter. Once those two wires are connected, it should start. "

Here's what I did: tapped into the black/yellow wire (car side) and ran it to the ST relay in the fuse box. Instead of taking the fuse out, I tapped into the wire that is connected to pin 2 of the relay which was a black wire.

Now she lives... but 2 problems.

1. I don't have a mid/ flex pipe yet, so it's freaking loud... I'm talking setting off car alarms across the street loud.
2. As soon as the key hits the "ON" position, something is making a rather loud "ZzZZZZ" sound. I suspect the starter... maybe a relay or something isn't doing it's job.

are you going to ask to have this thread deleted too?

1. go to the ehxuast shop and have them mate up the exhaust for you, or totally redo it to a nice 3in

2. the noise you hear is probably coming from your whinebro fuel pump. get used to it, or get an OEM supra pump

No I'm not going to delete this thread...

1. I will get the exhaust done soon, for sure. But I'm probably going to go with 2.5in so I can use my SP2

2. Would the noise be coming from my engine bay? I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't have tapped into the relay wire but instead wire it directly to PIN2 of the "ST" Relay.

Connecting the black and black/yellow wire together at the COR would have been much simpler than running a wire clear up to your starter relay and would have accomplished exactly the same thing:

this is the exact setup i have had for the past 2 years. while it works fine, i do regret not getting a full 3in exhaust from day one. the spool up will be much faster and youll gain at more power by going to a 3in

That's assuming that the wiring was done like that, remember, this is a 3SGTE swapped harness, so it might be different depending on how it was done. The 3SGTE harness is not set up like that.

Does the noise stop after a few seconds? If yes, it'll be the stepper motor on the throttle body. Perfectly normal.

Sweet the problem is completely fixed!

Instead of tapping the wire that goes to Pin2 of the relay, I cut it off completely from the wiring harness and ran the black/yellow wire straight to Pin2. If it wasn't dark out, I would take her around the block... but since I don't have a midpipe yet I will wait till tomorrow noon.

Special thanks to a couple people that made it possible to swap my car in under a week.

Toyceli8 for giving me such a great deal on his 3s and tranny and for giving me a hand whenever he could.

eggman40 for doing a great amount of labor, staying till 2AM even though he had work at 8AM that same day.

urbandork for always answering his phone to give me tech support over the phone.

Dr.Tweak for walking me through the wiring to bypass the start relay.

and lastly.... a huge thanks to the 6gc community, for having enough information on the swap to encourage me to tackle such a project....

Yeah, That was assuming the wiring was done the same way as RJB's. If for some reason the starter circuit was wired the same as the ST185's, connecting those two wires together will make the starter run constantly when the ignition is on.

More likely, it would blow the fuse... that circuit isn't built for that kind of power.

Anyway, problem is solved now.
