i have a 94 st that makes a knocking sound when i go over 3k too.
my check engine light is on and the code i got says the egr system but i don't know if they are related.
also if i am outside and reving it up from under the hood it makes the noise and it sounds like it coming from up top i am going to try to figure it out though and like you hope it's not a rod.
i'll let you know how minwe turns out.

Did you check your timing?

The question is not how far. The question is, do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far as is needed?

Sound like from wheel bearing... I have same problem when engine over 3k rpm even the car on idle (car is not running) or while driving, you can hear the noise around the axel. I am going to change wheel bearing in a month, but I have to find out how difficult to make a change.

a sound like a wheel bearing that comes from the engine when parked with the engine running could be a bad belt tensioner. one of my dads old fords did that, it eventually turned into a squeel.

see if you can narrow down where the noise is coming from in the engine bay.

I'm starting to hear a squeel kinda too now... But mine knocking noise is ony when i first turn it on (it knocks exactly 3 times) and when i go over (or come close to) 3000 rpm. And when it happened and i freaked and checked the engine, my oil was bone dry. I've sence discovered that my older car burns a little oil and i've never made that mistake again.

Take a long screw driver and put the blade end agianst the engine and the end of the handle onto your ear. This way, you can listen to where the knock is coming from. Check the head, then find a way to check the block. Believe it or not, if it's a rod bearing, you can actually narrow it down to 1, 2, 3, or 4th cyl. with this trick. That way, you know what you need to order. If it is a rod bearing, all you have to do is drain the oil, take everything off you need to take off to be able to take the oil pan off, take the oil pan off, put a socket and extension on each rod cap and give them a push frontwards (toward the front of the car) and backwards. If they move, you defiantly know that is a bad bearing. If none of them move, then start taking the caps off one by one, (make sure you DO NOT mix them up). The way you know if you have a bad bearing is if it is charred (which would be a spun bearing, and if it is spun, consider your self lucky that it didn't weld to the crank), or if you can see a lot of copper on the half of the bearing you have in your hand (after taking it out of the rod cap). When you reassemble, coat the inside (the part that will touch the crank) with assembly lube and find out what the right tourqe specifications are (you will have to use an inch-pound tourqe wrench).

Have a good one and good luck. -Spunky393

i found out today that its a rod thats making the noise and that it's cheaper to just do an engine swap than to try and rebuild the engine.

Darn!

What should i do?
