how many motor mounts are on the 5SFE, manual trannies? because I feel like one of my motor mounts is gone...I have replaced the rear, the left one under the airbox and then the front one this morning...still having the same problem. I get a vibration when starting off....if I put a strap from the hook on the front right side of the head to the front of the car by the battery, it stops the vibration....any ideas? I can tell something is up when I shift the car as well =\

lol, a strap? I believe there are 3 motor mounts and 2 tranny mounts. Where did you think of that idea? Mine vibrates when idling, like the mirrors shake, but go away when I rev the engine even slightly.

the shaking is because our mounts are a rubber composite, switch to urethane and all that energy lost in engine shaking gets converted into HP, the only problem is then you will have to reinforce where it mounts to accept the extra strain, and you will need to convert all the mounts to urethane to compinsate so nothing gets ripped lose, its a great mod to reduce powerloss, but it is time consuming, and they dont even make them for our cars anyways.

its not the mounts though...they are all brand new. Its something that it has been doing for the past 20k miles or so, since a time at the track or so I think, but it has gotten worse. Its not like normal vibration, its a clunking sound when I start off or anytime I give it gas at low RPM's.

To answer the first question - there is are 4 "motor mounts." Front, back, right, and left. Right is connected to the tranny, and so is the front, the back is connected to the engine and the left is also, but the left is less of a load bearing one.

Open up ur hood - find the battery on the right - go about 6 inches back. The mount is on the frame on the driver's side, and bolts directly onto the tranny itself.
Your motor mounts cant just "go." The only thing that could go wrong is if it tears - they're rubber and they can tear, and it would have to be a mighty big tear for you to notice anything at all, because theres 2 big mounts holding the front and back, and a small one thats on the left. Your motor mount has nothing to do with your clutch, it simply bolts the engine/tranny onto the car.

I think your getting things confused - you cant just replace a motor mount - u'd have to lift the engine out to do that and there are no straps to adjust.

im not getting the mounts confused...I have already replaced the 3 on the engine, the front, back and one on the left side under where the stock intake would be. The strap im talking about is my ghetto fabulous mod trying to get it so that **** doesn't happen. My engine is moving around more than it should...it ****ing clanks, im super pissed about it and nobody knows whats wrong. I know it doesn't directly relate to my clutch...but if the engine is trying to move away from the tranny and **** and stuff is moving that shouldn't...its not good. When I have the strap on to hold the engine forward instead of having it off...the car grabs gears much better.

My car has been doing that stuff too. My car vibrates like crazy sometimes, and makes really bad clacking / clunking noises when i hit the accelerator; i took it to a shop, and the verdict. She's about to throw a rod according to my mechanic, he says the 7afe does it very frequently and he's seen it a lot with my particular engine, but he's never seen one before it happened; so he cant be positive. I also have an auto tranny, but you do seem to be having a lot of the same problems, take it to a mechanic and have him take a stethoscope to her, or maybe you can do that urself. Maybe i'm just ranting out my ass, i dont know, that was my .02 or whatever...

I thought that you only had to take the cross member off and replace the engine mounts and then put the cross member back on.
Am I wrong? I dont know too much about all this.

you can do the mounts without taking the cross member off.

I don't think everyone is on the same page here...im about 99.9% sure its not an engine thing....simply because when I ghetto rig a tow strap to the engine to keep it from moving it goes away.
