So the fabric of my roof that goes around the back window is peeling away... it's still there, but you can see underneath where the window stops... i think it probably just needs to be glued back down or soemthing, but does anyone know what kind of glue i would use, and what would have caused it to get so loose like that?? just general wear and tear???

could you post a pic, i think i know what you are talking about but i dont want to give you wrong advice. Hard canvas like the tops doesnt like to be folded and stitched. when the sun hits it it dries it out and wants to go flat, thats why its doing that. I would probably use that gel super glue because it is waterproof and since its a gel, it wont sink into the fabric.

all i can say to you lisa depending on how big the gap is from that black peice of material glued on to the window will determine how screwed you are. if its bigger then two inches be prepared to take it to a shop and have them glue it back on with warranty of their work. because if you do it yourself it only gets worse i suggest take it to an actual dealer. the reason this happened is yes through wear and weather the top is starting to shrink little by little. my solution to my problem was my insurance agency they will cover this problem but it has to look more damage and i stress ( Vandalized ) more or less. because with certain insurance companies your monthly premium will not go up if the car has been vandalized, you pay a small deductible fee the amount of your car-note and they give you a new top with a back window. and in no way is it a scam or illegal which makes you feel good putting on a claim. and remember your top is shrinking so even if you do get it glued back on the problem is going to occur again in the future.

k im going to take a pic right now
thansk for the advice, the only thing, is i'm in canada and these are no where. the wreckers that i go to who has one, i dont think the roof is in good shape. and buying a new one and getting it shipped up here is going to be wayyyy out of my budget unfortunately. i'd probably take my car to a shop that specializes in convertible roofs before i take it to the toyota dealership. they never see my car ever, so them working on it would probably be the same as me working on it! haha... and i dont know if i want to go through insurance because then they'd have to come look at the car, and they dont know i have any mods on it (hehe) sooo yeah.. k goin to take a pic -------------------- lissa | 1997 Celica Convertible

is there certain things i shouldn't do with the roof - care wise? like, i dont spray it directly when i take it to the car wash... ive only once ever like soaked the thing and that was a while ago when my mom had to take it somewhere, and got bird crap on it. so i was cleaning it... but other than that, should it usually stay up? stay down? just some maintenance tips might help me out? You need to glue that back down with a special 3m adhesive. Easy fix.
I lay claim on 6gc to have the only top care tape for the 6gc. Its an excellent video every convertible owner should have, Made specifically by toyota for the 94-99 vert. |

No, not tape. I once tried a hot glue gun on a corvette top, and that didn't stick. They use a special adhesive.
Do a google searc for convertible top repair. They also sell a paint that you brush on, and it makes your top look brand new. As far as the tape, I tried to sell them a couple of years ago on the for sale forum. i can now burn them into dvds, and when I get some time, I will do that for the little angel. |

oh my friggen god, i feel like gettiung rid of this effing roof... ARRGGGGGGG
i went to put it up this morning, push the button and absolutely nothing... didn't move at all... i'm like omg, like sometimes one side will move more than the other, but this time, nope nothing. so i'm trying to haul this roof up myself, not working at all... ughhhh so annoying i just paid 400 bucks for 2 new motors and look how well theyre working@!!! i know theres that switch in the back to make it manual... will it be easier for me to pull it up if i use that because it won't be relying on the power to bring it up? or is that just a horrible mistake? what can i do now? get MOREEE motors?! like ****!!!!! -------------------- lissa | 1997 Celica Convertible

madmods, i would be really interested in buying one of those dvds off of ya if you got the time.
As far as the top goes. i feel your pain. Mine is peeling too, except down the right side, not up top. Also, sometimes my automatic button wont work at all, then i push it a couple of times and it starts to work again. Whats with that? lol. -------------------- Cuz Thats How Us Country Boyz Roll Growing up racing motocross, i learned one thing..."Always wear clean underwear, you never know when the Paramedics are gonna have to cut your pants off of you" |

i was thinking today, are most of the motors pretty similar? like is there any way i could use a motor thats stronger? ie: solara, or umm.. i dunno any other vert? s2k's? bimmers? etc etc... because i'm having a hard time with this one, and i know its approaching ten years old now, but theres no way i can lift that roof all the time, its much too heavy for me.

Lil theres no way your motors should be dead yet, not if you just got them. Are you hearing any noise?
Are the motors running but not pulling up? Could it be a fuse if you hear no noise? I know that top real good, because i had to completely replace my frame. It was cracked when i bought it. I got lucky to score a complete frame and top off ebay. It really wasn't that hard to put on either. About the top dvd. I would be up for permanetly placing it on this forum as a movie if thats possible. Somebody check with Coomer. its presently in VHS form, but i can burn it to DVD. i push the buttons and the motors are running, like i can hear it, but the top doesn't lift up at all... sometimes one side would go more than the other, but now it does't move at all... i got the motors last summer but they were used from a wreckers of a 98 vert.... and those motors were supposed to be wayyyy better weren't they???

...wow, i remember reading this thread when the issue was only a pealing top....kinda became something much larger eh? if u push the button and it does abolutly nothing, not even a noise from the motors, id check to see if its the switch, then the fuse, then if that doesnt work, check if the motors are getting current. (some type of wire breaking loose, or worse melting) If nothing else works, then look into replacing the motors.
sorry to hear about it. -------------------- Kawi Love |
