Which ECU do you have in your GT? Options

Hey all. I have a '96 'vert with a 5sfe and manual transmission. I am not the original owner. The car has this ECU 89661-2D410. The local dealer says this ECU is not spec'd for the Celica. Could all you 6th Gen. GT owners with manual transmissions respond with the part number of the ECU in your car? Also the model year and whether it is Federal or Calif emissions. Thanks.

I have a GT-S (94). It had a manual transmission and a 5S-FE engine before the swap. This makes it easy for me to check the number on the ECU as it is still lying on the work bench.

Have the Dealer check for a TSB to replace the ECU under emissions warranty see tech bulletins EG009-97 (for 97 models, the problem also affected some 96 GT 5 spd models

Thanks 97GTinKC. Yes, the production date indicated on my car is 9/95. I am aware of the TSB. My car behaves exactly as described in the TSB - at slight throttle openings and light loads, such as when going downhill, the engine bucks and surges as if it can’t decide whether to accelerate or decelerate. It drives me nuts. Unfortunately the ECU that I have is not one of the part numbers listed in the TSB as eligible for the improved ECU. Even if it was, the car is way beyond the warranty period. I found an ECU from a '98 GT (5sfe, MT, fed, etc.) for less than the prices indicated at the link. Anyone here know if an ECU from a '98 would work in my car? The wiring diagram, etc. in my shop manual appears to be the same for '96-'99 (OBD-II, etc.). Anybody?

You might check with Toyota cust service, I got them to replace mine out of warranty by writing to the president of Toyota USA and complaining, Keep it professional and civil, helps to include pics if your car is still in good shape, especially if the caption shows it at a meet or something, someplace where they could get publicity,,,(good or bad). After all they advertise customer service and then admit there is a problem (tech bulletin) and replace it only if you complain enough? Thats not exactly customer service in my book, It took several months but I finally got them to replace mine, (it was just out of warranty,) I countered that they knew there was a manufacturing problem back in 97 and it should have been recalled and fixed then. (all this assuming there IS a newer version for your car)
Part no for the corrected one in bulletin eg009-97 is 89661-2d692, this replaces 2d290, 2d690, and 2d691 Federal spec, (not Cal spec), there may have been a different bulletin for earlier models, ALLDATA no longer lets you search without paying. Most larger independent garages will also have a listing of bulletins you might check.

I have always wanted to try the corrected Camry ECU 89661-33732 listed in the same bulletin, after all, its the same engine in a heavier car, would it allow more fuel in, thinking its in a heavier car? as far as different years or models, no idea if they would function the same, You'd have to check the schematics to see if the leads all went to the same sensors and check the parts microfiche to see whether the sensors were the same between years. If the leads and sensors were the same, or at least the same test values in the repair manual, I dont see why it wouldn't work, It would take some time to cross-check everything, but then again, its a really annoying problem,,,

Other route would be to check with the people in my link above, see if they have the latest updates in their replacement units. the 2d692 version did fix 99% of the problem in mine, still get the occaisional single hiccup.
