Hi All -

I need some of your knowledge right now. Is the air conditioner compressor in the 5th gen 5SFE motor the same as the 6th gen 5SFE? Are they both R-134? I think I read that it makes a difference if the trannys are auto or manual, could somebody verify this? Please post answers. I found a compressor in a local junkyard and wanted to know if it's compatible. It's 100 degrees here and I'd like to cool off in my car. Thanks.

I noticed that no one responded to your post so I will offer what I can. I am not sure if they are interchangable but I was told by a friend who is AC certified that the compressor on my 1995 Chevy would not be interchangable with an older R22 compressor. He said that they run at different pressures and the lines and plugs are different. They have conversion kits for the old systems to change the gas but I don't believe that necessarily makes them interchangable.

There should be a label somewhere specifying which gas and how many pounds are required somewhere in the engine compartment. Make sure they are the same adn make sure all the plugs are the same as well. You can also look at the fittings where the AC tech would attach the hoses. The R134A connections are quite a bit larger than the R12 lines.

Someone else more knowledgable with AC systems should be able to answer your question better.

You could try calling a place that services them and tell them you simply can't afford a new one and ask if the used one will fit.

Another option is to look up the compressors from the two different models on Autozone or Advanced Auto and see if the part numbers are the same.

Last resort, call the Toyota parts department.

I found out that the part number is 10PA17VC and printed on a little sticker on the compressor itself. It makes a difference if the car is auto or manual tranny and it has to be R134, not R12. It looks like the only thing I can do is buy a new one and have it installed so they can warrant it.

Luckily, I only have to put up with it for a few more weeks until I leave the country. When I get back in October, it should be cool enough so I won't need it anymore. Then, I'll just fix it next spring. Thanks for the help, though.
