i thought i finally solved the problem of having a cold start in the mornings if i bought some Iridium Spark Plugs (NEW) and some new Magnecore 8.5mm Spark Plugs wires to boost up the effect, but somehow, i am still getting a cold start still. By cold startl, I mean, i have to floor it a little to keep the engine hot, other wise, it will die out on me. Even my old 1988 honda starts better than my celi...one click it is revs high then idles quickly...can anybody help....i want that nice easy simple start up in the morning like a NEW CAR...just turn and BAM...ignition and ready to go...

I took my car to the Toyota dealer because I really didnt wanna mess with the engine.
Anyways, LewFX really knows his engine stuff, they basically said it was the Idle Control Valve (same thing as wut LewFX said) and they sprayed some carb cleaner on it. They said I could replace it and it would cost $680 Cdn and I thought that was crazy.... the carb cleaner sorta works.. not that great though. What can I do, I'm not really grasping the whole concept of this valve, like you know those air intake bypasses, do those bypass this valve ... |

Can I just put one of those AEM air bypass valve's or something like that... |

i dont know much about engines, hence me asking the question about the bypass valve. I was just trying to see if I could get around replacing the part. I seriously didn't know what the idle control valve did, therefore I asked.. sorry if it was a stupid question.
Chacha: I didnt have to take the part (idle control valve) out to clean. what I did is disconnect the air intake hose. you will see the idle control valve and on the top there is a little hole. Start the car, and then manual rev the engine, while doing so spray the carb cleaner into the hole. You might have to do it a couple times to get it fully clean... now my engine starts like it did before this happen. And i get to keep the $100 to replace the part in my pocket...lol (ill take a pics of the engine and label what I'm taking about) (sorry if i don't know the correct terminology, I don't want anyone to insult my lack of knowledge with regards to engines) |

I seriously didn't know what the idle control valve did, therefore I asked.. sorry if it was a stupid question. it's all good, didn't mean to come off harsh or anything lol it's just that my friend at work put a bypass valve on his CRX and was telling me that it "bypasses air at high RPMS so it's like having a turbo it sucks in so much more air" I just wanted to punch him. For your information, the AEM bypass valve goes on the air intake to bypass water out of the intake in case you get your air inlet under water I've never messed with idle valves so sorry I'm not much help -------------------- 1999 Celica GT

hahahaha....thanks, much appreciated...my hands and fingers are all F*** up because of burns...i literally took apart the throttle...cleaned it...took some of the B12 chemicals and poured 15 ounces into my gas tank...pour 8 ounces of it into the engine bay and use the rest of the B12 to clean the throttle and the intake manifold...when i first started it, it seemed as if it was going to die...but after a couple of high revs...it sounded perfect...i also clean the little filter on the EGR modulator...next to the EGR vavle...don't know if i will get a clean start torrow...but ill update if that changed anything...if it wil start up strong and rev high like it suppose to....in the early morn of course... (i pour some b12 fluid in the engine bay and the gas tank to clean out gunk stuck in there....less restriction...better flow, i hope ^_-)
OH yeah..LewFX...how did you take off your IAC and clean it...mines really hard to pull out...the thread and bolts itself had corrison, hard to get out...what did you exactly do to get yours out and how you clean out the IAC....can you post or make a sticky? Doing this really helped me out with the help of Jeff's pic and guide...if you are having some trouble starting up early in the morning, where the car bogs on and off...
1. Remove the whole Throttle body piece from intake manifold 2. try removing the IAc attached to the throttle body, unscrew the four small screws that holds IAC in place.. 3. Clean the IAC with some B-12 Carb formula with a Metal small brush to brush off all the black gunk stuck in the small holes in the IAC...since you are doing this, might as well clean your throttle body and intake manifold to your best ability with some of the Chemical (B-12 Carb formula) 4. Let it dry for 10 minutes and attached everything back together... This should solve problem...better air flow and suction...stronger the car is at recieving a better idling at higher RPM... *note: if you are unexperience and don't know much and scared to do it (like me)...it will take a while...more than 4 hours of frustration and anger...because of bolts that won't come lose...if that is the case... use a VICE-GRIP TOOL to get the small bolts/nuts out and replace it with M5-.8 nuts/bolts...preferrably the 5mm x 16 should do the trick...found at home depot...$0.75 On the other hand, if you know what to do, less than 15 minutes for everything to work out fine **I just took my whole throttle piece to a shell mechanic store to have them help me turn the stubborn nuts/bolts off from my IAC connected to the Throttle Body...using their VICE-GRIP TOOL....didn't charge...they just twist it and turned it out for me... I haven't had the chance to ride it and test it in the mornings...but i will update. REMEMBER, this is just one way to help, if this doesn't help out at all....might be your small THERMOSTATS that's messed up, or some other parts....this took me a while to find the soultions to solve this darn problem...hope it helps you guys...if in doubt, aim me @ chasquare... just as a tip...the four screws that hold the IAC in place can be tough to get out, but if you use an impact screwdriver (~10$ @ autozone) the come right out, no problems, and no stripping...unless of course theyre rusted so bad they break...lol
always try the spray method before pulling it all apart IMO, if that dont work then move on to removing the TB and AIC for cleaning. -------------------- Former Team 5SFTE pro member ;)

what i learned is never use a regular screwdriver or a small headed one, use the big head, more gripping power and wont strip like others.
