Ok, so yesterday i goto start my car, and its making a REALLY weird sound. I cant really take a sound clip or anything, but it sounds like something broke and is now settling somewhere. Whenever i try and rev it makes a sound as if the engine is gargling metal? Its coming from the back close to the firewall, and it wasnt anything i can eye down. I just dont know what to do. Ive lost a bit of power, which is rediculous cuz my ST is already slow as....so i feel like an old lady. If anyone has any suggestions let me know. Its a consistent sound, it just gets louder when i rev higher.

its non interference, thats a very remote possibility.

check your oil level and drain the old oil. look for metal in it.

is it idling extra rough? if it is pull one plug wire at a time till you pull one that has no effect, that means that cylinder isnt working and with the sound you got it could be a busted rod or spun bearing. lots of things could be going on in there. but start with checking the oil level

Same thing happened to my car (I think)frown.gif . The car idles fine but has this loud a$$ metal pinging noise in the engine. The problem was the main bearing was gone due to low oil level. You can either replace the main bearing in the engine and hope nothing else is broken or just replace it. I went with a replacement and it was a b**** to do. Good luck.

thanks guys...i hope its just oil. It kind of idles rough at times, when im in low RPMs it kinda pulls hard and then lets go and is really rough... I had checked the exhaust already just cuz it sounded like it was down there, but its not. If the oil doesnt turn anything up ill take it to a shop to get the things fixed. and if its too expensive ill just start my swap earlier.

well the good news is i think it was the oil. Somehow there was absolutely NO oil in the car. I went out to some pretty crazy houses (lots of rocks and hills and what not) but i dont think theres any kinda leak. However, it hasnt even been 3000 miles yet, so i dont know what the deal is....I added 2 qts of oil for now, its still making the sound, just not as much. And ive gained a little power back, but the low end is still rough. Any suggestions?

well 4 qts of oil doesnt just vanish, it either leaks out or burns out. if you burned 4qts i'd think you'd know about that. honestly your engine is probably dead from a mechanical stand point. the damage has been done and it will seize if you keep driving it. stop driving it till you repair or replace the engine, otherwise it will literally explode like a grenade and send parts of it through the block and out of the oil pan. if you're going to repair it, you may as well take the chance to put in better rods and pistons, either low cp for FI or high CP for NA.

=( well Bitter hit it on the nose. I took it to a mechanic and he said the motors dead. It hadnt seized yet, but its beyond repair. So now i have to look at my options. I can
1. swap another 7afe in there for 4k
2. attempt to do my own swap.
3.get tweak or someone to do it for me.
4. buy another car.

what should i do? I love my celica, and im fortunate to have another one....but i really liked this one.

$4k for another 7afe is awfully pricey, even including labor. get a rebuilt 5sfe and have a cheaper shop swap that in unless you'd really like to stick with the 7afe for fuel savings.

its not so much that your current motor is beyone repair, its more likely that the shop will make more money off swapping or it'll take less time to swap than to rebuild your current motor. PLUS if they charge you for the new motor and labor then they get a freebie, your old motor! they get a core when they send that to the rebuilders, probably a few hundred dollars in addition to what you pay them.

yea well this would be a newly rebuilt engine is what im told. There were so many things wrong with this motor though, they probably wouldnt be able to use much. 5sfe is antoher option, but if im gonna through all that trouble might as well go for a 3sgte. I dont drive long distances, just to school and back, and i still have another celica and an Xterra that are available, so im really wanting to swap pending the money i can work up.
