ok so this is really weird, i drive my car to work yesterday, everything was fine. when i goto leave i turn the key and all i hear is "click" (starter trying to turn) and that was it... dead... battery has proper voltage.... tried jumping it... heres the weird thing. when the key is on lock it beeps and its all good... when i turn it to acc "sometimes" it will turn on the fuel pump and fans.... and if it does.. when i turn it to start with the clutch in i get the same click and dead... after this happens if i turn the key back to lock, all the lights in the car are super dim but if i wait about 10 seconds i get proper voltage back.... im getting 2 votls or so when its in this finicky state.... anyone have ANY idea of what the hell this could be? i would think a ground wire but i checked all the ones i can get to. including the main ground(s). do you think maybe its just the ignition switch shorting out?

bah.. it ends up being a bad cell in the battery, stupid optima... now i buy another one, this one has 3 y ear free replacement tho! never had a battery just plain FAIL like that before, always just stopped holding a charge before.. o well coulda been worse! i tested the starter first to make sure it was good.... which is different than the US spec celica so its a damn good thing it wasnt that! 4 week wait from toyota japan on that sucka!

Hey,
I cant explain all the funky stuff thats going on, but the one click when hitting the key sounds like the starter contacts are worn out. It happens to most all toyotas eventually. You can either get a reman. starter from toyota or find someone who sells just the contacts. If you take the starter out its easy to get to the contacts from there! Just remove the 3 screws that holds a cover, with a 8mm socket and you can see the 2 copper contacts. I've done it hundreds of times on toyotas. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck! |
