has anyone here has ever done timing belt, adjust their own valves, and install their own head gasket? im asking cause im doing it but im not great under the hood. the shop quoted me over 500 on this and im thinking WOW. the thing i need to know most is adjusting the valves and the timing belt. thanks yall

i'm currently learing how to do it, waiting for my haynes manual to arrive to get the torque specs.

too bad i dont have the 6th gen celica handbook. i have a 90-99 to its kinda confusing cause they keep going back on 86-89 celicas. i should get myself one.

Go to celicatech.com and become a member there. You can get all kinds of information. They have the BGB's (Big Green Books) which provide all the info you need.

interesting. all 5sfe are built the same right? i tried to read the 90-99 celica handbook it they showed some weird things that aren't on my celica??? kindasad.gif

i paid over $500 to have my timingbelt done, it should be around there for most shops, some a bit cheaper, some a bit more

and changing headgasket alone would cost anywhere between $800 to $2k!!! yes, one shop actually quoted me $2,000 usd and the $800 was more than a quick estimate, but it should be closer to $1,000, i live in a big metro area, but if you live in smaller towns/cities, it should be cheaper

wow damn. i was quoted 200 for headgasket and 150 for timing. another 150 for adjusting my valves or something. damn
anyone?

Head gasket? Are you sure they didn't quote you the valve cover gasket? They are different, and the head gasket shouldn't be changed unless it's blown. Mine has 265,000 miles on it and the head gasket has never been changed, but the valve cover gasket gets changed every time the cover is off. Timing belts are usually between 300 and 600 and I recommend you have the water pump changed at the same time (saves on labor cost and the pump is usually about 60 dollars). From people I've talked to about doing their own timing belts, it sounds like it's best left to the pros. It's not easy to get at in our cars and the consequences of not doing it right means you have to have it towed to a shop to get it fixed which will cost. Good luck!

sounds good. thanks but has anyone ever do their own adjustment of valves?a guy told me i needed it but i didn't undrestand why? thanks for the input guys

Ok guys i might be stupid but i am in the middle of changing my timming belt.
I don't see any way to adjust the valves on mine the cam lobes sit on what i
would guess are the lifters.
i know mine is a different engine 7afe are they different? i mean in the way the cam is installed
but other than replacing the lifters if that is in fact what they are i would not see
any way to adjust the valves.
Is the 5sfe different in that way?
I have yet to experiance the 5s engine......just wondering.

According to my book there are shims that you can replace to adjust the valves.

I don't know a thing about valves or head gaskets, but I just replaced my timing belt. It took me about 8 hours, but that's only cause the Celica is the first toyota I've ever worked on. I could cut that time in a quarter if I was to do it again. It didn't cost me a dime over $31 too.(the price of the belt) People told me later that I should have replaced the tensioner, but whatever, too late now. Anyway, as long as you've got a GT, I'd totally be up for walking you through it the best I can online. If I ever do it again, I'll make a "how-to" for it.
