Ok my gf's car is a 97 St with the 7afe motor. She "blew it up" a couple of months ago and her grandpa "fixed" it by replacing the rod bearings. When she starts it, it has a knocking sound and then it stops and when the revs get to about 4grand it starts again. Now from my experience with motors I think its the rod bearings again and I told her I would replace them. Is there anything that I should know before tearing it apart? Also, what are the torque specs for the rod bolts?
Actually I am peronally a honda guy in the process of completing my turbo project on my d16y8 in my 98 ex, but I have love for all cars. |

sounds like the new bearings arent in right or there was damage to the crank or connecting rod. you'll need to mic the crank journal to get the correct sized bearing, possibly get the crank machined if its been damaged, and it wouldnt be a bad idea to replace the rod.

I would never take a chance after a spun bearing.
Do it right, have the crank reground and get oversized bearings. Oh and by the way welcome. Torque according to Chiltons. 22lbs first pass Final pass turn an additional 90deg. for 97-98 only 94-96 are different. Would it be ok just to sand down the crank with some emory cloth?
Even though this car is a ST I have fell in love with it. I can't wait to get this thing running right so I cant put an i/h/e on it. |

.......no its not ok to just "sand down the crank" lol jk, but that wont keep it in round and if theres that bad of damage your going to need to take more material off that your thinking. while your doing this thing, nice the rods, crank, and main caps. Then get some plastigauge for when your assembling the motor check all clearances. once you've checked with plastiguage make sure you clean it out off the crank, put lots of assembly lube on the main caps, and spin the crank by hand (before attaching rods). Check if it spins smooth as well, if not youll be needing to take the crank out and feeler guage the crank journals in the block by laying a straight edge across. that should get you started. While your at it have the cylinder walls honed and get some new piston rings, but once you do that put some oil on the walls so they wont rust.
