Hey,
I just got a 3sgte to go into my black hatchback, but i need to buy a new clutch before i can swap. I only have until july 20th to conplete the swap and money is available but a little tight. I plan on running the stock gt tranny casually for a year and then upgrading. I basically need something that will be good enough to handle the 3sgte, but not a stage 3 kit or anything since i need to focus the money in getting the car operational first. Any advice? could i use something like this? http://www.clutchcityonline.com/products/16-073.shtml or am i REALLY going to be pushing my luck by getting a cheap clutch? Thanks guys. PS: can i use the flywheel from the AWD tranny i got with the 3sgte? This post has been edited by jcbass7: May 16, 2006 - 11:36 AM |

QUOTE(lagos @ Mar 2, 2006 - 7:09 PM) you hear this tweak? this is why ive been saying not to use an OEM clutch in a swap. i had pretty much the same problem as bboy after installing a new OEM PP with a act street disk after about 6 months of driving. Call spec and get them to make you the custom disk. they pretty much know exactly what you need by now since i ordered mine, and got other people turned onto doing the same thing. do NOT go any higher then a stage 3, 6 puck disk. a stage 2 disk is probably perfect for normal street driving, while still being able to hold the power of the 3sgte. a stage 3 disk is less forgiving and wants to grab right away. its less streetable, but after you get used to it, youll really like it. if i had to give an honest opinion of mine, id say i love it, but i can see how its a little over kill for the power im making. clutch masters is another good brand, but for some reason they want about 600$ for a clutch kit for us... it seems very over priced. ACT is alright. one thing that i dont like about their higher end puck clutches is that the presure plate is very heavy giving you serious work out on your foot and their clutches are not spring loaded so they will not engage as smoothly . as for the chirping you hear when u let the clutch out at idle, i have had the same thing. the problem happens from lack of lubrication to the fork, or throwout bearing. an easy fix is to adjust your clutch pedal freeplay untill the noise goes away . This man knows what hes talking about. Trust me. You say that you have a 3S-GTE? Then pay close attention to the 2nd paragraph. -------------------- Teh Celica sleeps for Winter '06. Clutch: if using the gt tranny with the 3sgte motor, you will need: 5sfe disk (or a custom made 3sgte disk, with the splines for the 5sfe tranny) 5sfe throwout bearing 5sfe alignment tool 3sgte pressure plate 3sgte flywheel (or just get your stock one resurfaced) if you are going to use an mr2 turbo tranny, then all you need to do is buy a clutch kit for a 90-93 turbo mr2. be carefull when buying clutch disks for the 5sfe tranny. a stage 1 disk for the 5sfe is not the same thing as a stage 1 disk for the 3sgte. so if you get something like a stock oem clutch or a ACT street disk, it probably will not hold the power you need to put down. if you call up a company like Spec or Clutchmasters and tell them about your project, they can make you a custom disk that can hold the power you will make and have the correct spline count that you need. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

or this http://www.6gc.net/index.php?action=parts&itu=491 would either of those be a decent choice? i really plan on either upgrading the tranny or converting to AWD within the year. |

you seem to be missing the part about not being able to just buy any 5sfe clutch kit. you have to mix and match parts to make it work with the 3s motor and the 5s tranny. go to specclutch.com. get their phone number and call them up. tell them what motor you have and what tranny and that you want the stage 2 or stage 3 clutch. use my quote above for reference when ordering.

I understand that i need peices from both, but i figured i could use the 3sgte flywheel, and pressure plate and then buy a clutch kit for a 5sfe tranny and use the parts i needed from there. I was going by your list above ^
5sfe disk 5sfe throwout bearing 5sfe alignment tool 3sgte pressure plate 3sgte flywheel I wasn't sure if i needed to have a custom peice made. Thats what i wanted to avoid, since it would make life easier, but if i do then ill give spec a call and tell them my set-up. Thanks for the help so far, and hopefully i won't act like a nooob too much during the entire swap process... of course this is mostly new to me This post has been edited by jcbass7: May 18, 2006 - 5:37 PM |
