i got sick of dealing with paper clips or little pieces of wire that would never stay in right, whenever i wanted to put the car into diagnostic mode. so with a little research into the wiring diagrams, i made a handy diagnostic switch ! now if you want to check your CEL codes, or put the car into diagnostic mode to check the timing, just flip the switch !
to make your own, all you need is some type of switch from a car parts store. make sure the switch is sealed, meaning that none of the terminals stick out of the back of it. next unwrap the tape from the harness that goes to the diagnstic box and find the ORANGE wire. slipce into it, but dont cut into it, so that anytime somone works on your car (toyota maybe) and wants to put the car into diag mode, it will still work. connect one wire from the switch to the orange wire you just exposed. then connect the other wire from the switch to any ground point on the car. tape everything back up and you are now ready to use your switch ! this will work on any OBD1 3sgte. it should also work on an OBD1 5sfe, but doubble check a wiring diagram to make sure they didnt change the color of the wire that needs to be spliced into. Another good way to short the connectors is using two male terminals out of a connector. Cut the wires and hook them together. Just so you know. Your idea is unique. Good idea, But I hope my check engine light doesnt come on that often! later............

its not just for check engine lights.
you can use it when checking your ignition timing, also. its a good idea to check it about once a year or so. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

I like to put my diagnostic mode switches on the inside of the car. You can splice into the TE1 and E1 wires coming straight out of the ECU.

I did that with my Supra...had the switch right by the shifter. It's common sense, so much easier and less ghetto, hehe!

i wanted to keep my switch in the engine bay so that i wouldnt hit it by accident or if anyone was in my car, they didnt play around with it. but you can mount it anywhere you like.

Hah, don't you hate that? When people start flipping switches or playin' around with the TT or BC? That gets on my nerves. I feel violated when a passenger does something like that...or messing with the S-AFC. HEY, if you wanna touch something, grab the handhold when accelerating WOT, LOL!

HEY, if you wanna touch something, grab the handhold when accelerating WOT, LOL! i hear ya man, i got more switches than an airplane cockpit (figure of speach) and some ppl just need to find out what they do. a few of them are not meant to be used while driving in heavy traffic (ex: powerful reverse lights). I often find myself locking up my desktop, alot of ppl can't handle using my carPC without messing up my desktop and my playlist and stuff. I know it's been awhile, but I need this up. I'm in the process of doing this, and I can't find the orange wire. It is the same color for the 5sfe?

It is the same color for the 5sfe? your basically just grounding out the TE1 wire. so you can try to look at the back of that diagnostic box to see where it goes. i just looked at the 5sfe diagram i have, and it says that it would be a solid yellow wire on a 5sfe. im just not 100% sure if the diagram i have is a 5th or 6th gen one, or if the colors changed at all during that time. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

Simple way to mount it inside the car andkeep people from messing with it would be to just put it out of sight. Out of sight, out of mind, no one will mess with it unless you tell them about it. I had our GReddy Boost Controller installed in the glove box for this exact purpose. You could hide the switch in the center console box or in the back wall of the glove box really easily I bet.

I put it right next to the diagnostic port. Only needed about 10inches of wire, if that. It's not like I need to flip the switch on the fly. And I do conferm, the yellow wire. Man, this is such an easy thing to do and so helpful. The reason I needed to check it turned out to be throttle body positioning sensor. There are 3 plugs on a 5sfe, and I unplugged every one of them working on it the other day and forgot to plug them in again. I can't believe it ran. That just proves what you can take off.
