So, I've got a Celi ST... and its just not cutting it power wise... Which would be easier/more cost effective... Turbo charging it to a nice safe 8 psi on stock internals or doing a 4agze swap, I'll be doing all the work myself so labor prices wouldnt be something i need to consider... I'm mostly looking for info from people who have done a 4agze swap... I looked over this site quite a bit but couldnt find much on that... any input ont he subject would be great... thanx.

it would be nice to do a 4age swap. i believe its the same to do a turbo too. 4age dont cost alot plus 4age clips are not easy to get a hold of. if i were you, turbo it until your engine dies and then get a swap. that's what im doing instead of getting a 3sgte.

Run a fine-tooth comb over the 7AFE thats in your car, and see what your compression figures are like, timing belt condition, mileage, etc.

If your motor has been well taken care of you might want to turbo what you have. If it checks out badly then get yourself a 20v, that would be my choice other than a 7AFTE.

i have turboed my 7a pushing around 7-9 psi feel great but i worry about how long it will last so i am building up a 20v 4age so it will handle around 10-15 psi and have the reliablity that the 7a just would not have at that psi range biggrin.gif i would turbo your 7a then when it runs out of power for you then swap wink.gif

iam in the process of turboing my ST, but in my opinoin, if you have the money and its not a problem for you then do the 4agze swap. how ever if you'll be happy with your ST running between 6-10psi then i'd turbo it, it will make it a totaly different car, and turboing it will be ALOT cheaper than a swap espicaly if your doing the work your self. i just put together a turbo kit for around $900.

iv'e been through the 7afte, and in my opinion, the way to do it right is to just swap a 3sgte, or if you like, a 4agze. The engine should be more reliable and can take the pressure.

I figured a while ago, that for an ST, you will get more horsepower per dollar by turbocharging though, so that is something to conider also: ~$3000 for 3sgte, 225hp=.075hp/$, whereas 7afte costs ~$1500 for 170hp=.11hp/$, not to mention a swap takes much more time and effort... just things to concider. I think its worth the extra for the swap though, just in knowing that your car is reliable and the engine won't blowup.

The hardest and most complicated way is always the best heh... Swapping in a 3sgte is your best bet for power and potential... Your going to have a decent and fun car with a turbo st its not going to put much power out but fun none the less. 4agze would be the best bang for the buck. Thats what I would do if your lookign to go down the boosted way. If not the 20v is a great engine and it makes a decently fast car for NA on a celica. But if you blow your motor on a turbo'ing an st lets say you put 1k into a hood rigged turbo setup.... and it blows up now you decide you want to get a 20v clip and there not cheep... just save your money and buy a 3s clip / s54 tranny.
