whats up guys, i had a question, i just got a 3s swap, and im thinkng about getting a suspension upgrade, the problem is along with that comes the lowering of the car most often. i really dont want to lower my car because I KNOW FOR A FACT that something bad will happen (my intercooler is about as low as my lip) i wish i could show you guys pics. what should i do? im tired of that horrible fender gap, an dmy car handles funny when going around turns (body roll)

any help would be appreciated!

sway bars and strut bars. thicker tires and/or bigger rims. stiffer springs that aren't too low. better struts. other stuff.

Suspension upgrade doesn't always mean drasticly lower.

If you purchase a full coilover suspension like the Tein SuperStreet dampers, Ground Control + Koni Yellows, etc.....you'll have a higher spring rate (more so with the Teins), adjustable struts to allow for less flex, and you could if you wanted keep the ride height the same. With the avalability of ride-height adjustment, you can tailor exactly how high or low the car sits based on performance or drivability needs.

If you were to get nice sticky tires, coilover suspension, sway bars, etc, you could have amazing handling and not sacrifice one bit of ground clearance if thats what you'd like.

im thinking about getting thicker tires (i have 205 40s) what are good coilovers? and how much compared to the typical 6gc tein s tech and kyb shocks? ive heard bad things about coilovers, which is why i thought to aviod them

my main concern is scraping, (they cant build driveways worth a damn around here) and hitting something in the road like a shoe or a small piece of shredded tire (sometimes unavoidable unles you straddle)

IF you don't have sway bars, invest in those first. The best suspension investment for the celica. Trust me you'll notice it right away. Great great first thing to do suspension wise

tires will make a huge diffrence, too.

the 205s are tiny on them 17" wheels.
a good adjustable coilover would do what you want.
adjustability, (height wise) and better handling as well,
sway bars ect will tighten things up consideribly.
after driving on 225/45/17 ill NEVER buy a set of smaller size tires for a 17" rim on my car.
the ride quality and overall grip improvment is just amazing. (michelin pilot sport a/s helps..lol)

All coilovers are not bad but when you pay 100 dollars for a brand new set, yea you will have issues. Ground Control and Tein are good ones to go with.

Easternpiro, when you quoted my response before you answered your own question- you had asked which coilovers were good and I stated Teins or GC.
If you'd like the best, buy Tein SuperStreet fully adjustable coilovers like I have on my car. Ground Control with an adjustable shock isn't bad, I've driven an RSX with GC installed but heres the main difference......they aren't a one-piece assembly unlike the Teins which are, its just a perch that sits in your stock strut design and is liable to move around more and "pop" when they are fully extended and re-seat themselves. In my honest opinion, I would never buy something that wasn't perfectly matched but they do work and are more cost effective than a full coilover. IMO, you get what you pay for and the Tein system is just more performance oriented altogether.

If you want the absolute best handling you can get while still being able to adjust ride height to stock levels, start with good tires, then buy the Tein coilovers and you'll be very happy. Or, if money is more tight you could get the GC+Koni combo, which is capable of the same goal for less money.

Either way a great place to start is a set of great tires and sway bars, then take it from there as to what you really want and can afford to do.

you need to upgrade everything else on that car..

you've put a beast under the hood, now the rest of the car can't compensate for the power you're putting out. it's borderline dangerous if you don't do anything about suspension, brakes, tires, etc.

don't worry so much about lowering the car, just worry about bringing the rest of the car up to spec. you've almost tripled the horsepower in the car, you might wanna play a little game of catch-up before you decide to do anything else to the motor.

strut bars, better brakes, better tires, lowering, and you'll be alright. it's time to start dumping money in to the rest of car so you'll have a nice well rounded ride, instead of just an ST chassis bolted to a 3sgte.

youre absolutely right i checked out jaws setup and it didnt seem that much lower. i may have to go with the teins. and i have a rotor upgrade but i will fous on the suspension first...in what order did you start upgrading the extras?
