Ok so I got that code 52 last week and just ordered the ATS GM knock sensor kit over the weekend. Now today i just read somewhere on mr2oc that all the GM sensor does is "ignore knock" because it vibrates at a different frequency than the stock toyota one.

What do you guys make of this? I dont want to run the risk of damaging my engine because i'm getting undetected knock. did i just waste my money on the "more durable" ATS GM sensor?

this is one thing that kinda worries me about the GM knock sensor mod:
your knock sensor is, in very basic terms, a microphone, tuned to a specific frequency.
the gm knock sensor is tuned to 5.8khz, and the 3SGTE one is tuned to 6.6khz.
while they may be close, they ARE diffrent.
exactly how much this effects the knock systems response is somthing i dont have the answer to, unfortunatley..lol
heres a copy past from somthing i found with a quick google search:

the gm sensor listens at 5.8 khz and has a non resonant pulse at a higher amplitude as opposed to 6.6khz for the toyota which has a lower amplitude sine wave i had one on my car rev3 turbo and had holdiong back issues switgched to to the oem and was fine

Always go for the Toyota knock sensor for the reasons stated above...they are by far the best for the car. I wouldnt put anything but a MrT knock sensor on to my car...which as it happens is going to need replacing soon frown.gif more money to throw at the car...dam thing.

OEM knock sensor, new ignition components, 1 step colder plugs, and (if you are still having problems) water injection.

i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this.

ok so i've tried contacting ATS twice now. first of all, when i ordered the knock sensor, i got no invoice/receipt (other than from paypal). i didnt even get a confirmation email or a thank you or ANYTHING. so ive written 2 emails over the course of the week. the first simply stated that ive read about the differences in the OEM and GM sensor, and i'd like either an explaination on the true nature of the GM sensor, and i'd like to cancel/return my order. no reply. the sencond email lightly said that i was unhappy and would still like to cancel my order. no reply yet.

ATS is not making me happy right now. im not gonna buy the OEM one till i get the $ back from ATS. GRRRR

OK I finally got in contact with Ken @ ATS. here is one of the replies that i got from him:

You can return the knock sensor for a full refund, however you have heard
wrong. The GM sensor is just as sensitive as the stock Toyota sensor and
behaves exactly the same when installed on the vehicle. The only difference
is that it doesn't break like the OEM Toyota one.

Now i dont know if I want to use the GM sensor, or pay almost 3x the cost and wait for Toyota (who cant identify what kind of sensor i need because it doesnt have a part # and i dont know what date my engine was manufactured.)

can i hear some opinions?

just finished reading this thread too:

http://www.mr2oc.com/showthread.php?t=4841...ht=knock+sensor

i still cant decide. nobody seems to like the GM sensor, but there are people who use it and have no problems. one thing i did learn though, is that i have to fix whatever was causing knock in the first place. new ignition components are on the top of the list.
