I must say this site is very informative and very interesting.I have read some of the transmission posts but i havent gotten a concrete answer.I am from jamaica i currently have a toyota trueno ae110(like a levin) not sure if u are familiar with it.Anyway i have a 3sgte engine from the caldina for my swap and i am a person who prfers bottom to midrange power not so much top end.I have heard conflicting stories that the e153 (3sgte) is best for top end however there was someone in the caribbean who used the v6 camry (e56)transmission he said he didnt like it as the ratios were too short and he made his power in fourth gear.Others in jamaica have done the swap but i cant get a hold of anyone to ask about best transmission.I am wondering since many of you have done this swap which would be a better gearbox for drag racing(please give the code tranny and from which car)As i say i prefer a very quick car not so much high speed plus jamaica is full of mountains and corners so not much highway runs.Which gearbox is best for this

i am very familiar with your trueno, why did you take out the 4age? it has the low the mid range power you're asking of, the 3sgte does pull hard up top if thats what you're looking for. IMO, you'd want something with top end (drag racing) stick with the 3sgte, or if you want to auto x, or play in the moutains like you said, the 4age would be a nice choice, why did you swap in a 3sgte? Your trueno did come with the 20v 4age, did it not?

i wish.No i was not fortunate enought to have a high revving 20valve engine. My version is ae110 which came with a 5afe engine which is a 1500cc dohc engine.Mine is a 1999 .I was considering getting the 20 valve blacktop which came with the 6 speed gearbox but the cost of it was the same as the 3s so i chose 3s as i was looking for 250-300whp with relatively little modifications

I'd say the S series transmission in our GT Celica's and non-turbo MR2's would be a good trans - if you want lots of torque and low-end power. This can be mated to the 3S easily, and can handle a decent amount of power.

The US version's didn't have an LSD, but I believe there are aftermarket options available.

The cars that have superstrut suspension, does also have the E56 tranny. The S54 is the most common, but does NOT have LSD. No that's the easiest option. The best option would be the one from the Celica SSIII Beams 3S-GE - already has LSD and the gearing is supposed to rock. Plus you would not need a hybrid clutch setup since both the motor and the tranny are for 3s as opposed to the 5S tranny which will need a combination 5S-3S clutch setup. However many of the good brands do offer that setup.

Really i didnt know that i asked someone wen i was buying the clutch if i should buy for the engine i have cause i didnt get a transmission with the engine. So altho both were from a 3s engine the celica gt gearbox will not bolt up jus like that without that hybrid clutch u speak of This post has been edited by teamchancery: Jun 29, 2006 - 11:54 PM |

QUOTE The best option would be the one from the Celica SSIII Beams 3S-GE - already has LSD and the gearing is supposed to rock. The 3SGE trans with LSD is an E56 - the same trans as the V6 Camry mentioned in the first post. QUOTE Plus you would not need a hybrid clutch setup since both the motor and the tranny are for 3s as opposed to the 5S tranny which will need a combination 5S-3S clutch setup. The 5S tranny was mated to the 3SGE ever since the ST162 model. You just need the 3SGE's clutch and flywheel. Most aftermarket companies offer 3SGE clutch upgrades - I dont know why everyone goes the custom route when there an 'off the shelf' option available. -------------------- Scott

Check out http://www.megaboost.co.uk/mr2/frames/techinfopage.htm for the gear ratio's of the US S54, JDM S54, and E153. Just for clarification:
US - 1990+ Celica GT, 5SFE Motor = S53 or S54 trans. JDM - 1994+ Celica, 3SGE Motor = S54 trans (non-LSD) JDM - 1994+ Celica, 3SGE Motor = E56 trans (LSD) IIRC, the E56 has nearly identical gearing as the E153 trans. JDM S54 trans has a different final drive ratio then the US S53/4 trans. -------------------- Scott
