QUOTE(6strngs @ Oct 16, 2006 - 8:34 PM) ok... after 3 days and about 13 hours of work, I still don't have this simple 1-2 hour job done! I absolutely cannot figure out how the rear mount and crossmember go back in! I've tried: putting the crossmember in and trying to wedge the mount on top putting the mount in and trying to wedge the crossmember in underneath putting the mount onto the crossmember and try to put them in together from the front, back, and sides jacking the tranny a lot, and jacking the tranny very little can anyone tell me EXACTLY what they did to get this in? if I can't get this in within the next couple of days, I may have to tow the car to a mechanic and get severly overcharged for it. HELP!!! with the mount and member out, i removed the bracket from the tranny. popped the mount and member in. loosely tightened a few bolts to hold them in place. then i stuck the trans bracket back in place, and finger tightned all the bolts. used a flex head ratchet to tighten the top and side bolts of the bracket and a 12 point box end wrench to get the bottom almost hidden bolt tightened down. itll take some time to get that last bolt tight, i just reloosened the member and pushed it to the side. good luck, i sure hope i never have to take that bad boy out again. |

OMFG!!! I think my car hates me! as soon as I get one thing right, two more go wrong!!!!! I took out the bracket that mounts the rear mount to the tranny and was finally able to get the rear mount back in where it's supposed to be! woot! but now I've run into more problems... for one: the two bolts that come out the bottom of the rear mount are loose... they became loose when I was trying to force the mount into place yesterday. so now when I try to tighten the nut, it just spins and doesn't go anywhere... I tried to pull the bolt down with pliers to make it pop back down in, and I've tried pushing it down from the top with a flathead screwdriver... no luck. anybody know how I can get these back into place? if I can at all.
Also, on the bracket that connect the mount to the tranny, I cannot get the lower bolt in. like, seriously can't. there is not enough room to even get the bolt started, let alone as tight as it needs to be. if I just put the other two in, do you think it'll be alright? ALSO, I tried rebolting the front mount to the crossmember. well, while I was doing so, one of the two bolts that go through the crossmember and through that awkward heavy metal thing kinda fell into the crossmember... like there is a hole on in the crossmember just an ever so perfect size to fit this bolt. what are the odds?!? so now I'm stuck. I don't understand. how is this so complicated?! I just want to be able to drive my car again! -------------------- 94 GT - Sold -------- 69 Pontiac Lemans - Sold 88 Alltrac - Sold ---- 04 WRX - Sold 00 GT-S - Sold ------ 91 Miata - project/drift car 95 GT - Sold -------- 96 GT - New Daily Drive |

ok. I think I have a good idea what I need to do. I'm going to pull it all back apart. jiggle the crossmember until the bolt falls back out (if that's even possible) if not, then I'll try to find an identical bolt somewhere. then I need to try to fix the rear mount with a hammer and a flat head screwdriver or something to try and push the bolts back through the mount. then assemble it all back together.
quick question: how hard is it to remove the other crossmember that goes horizontal? I just looked in my haynes manual on how to replace the engine mounts and it said to take it out and in the illustration it was just 4 easily accessable bolts, but this was on a 5th gen, I don't know if it's the same for a sixth gen. and if I'm not able to fix the rear mount, does anybody have an extra they'd be willing to ship to me with overnight shipping? I'd like to get done as soon as possible. I have school and work all day tomorrow, so no progress probably unless I decide to pull an all nighter on it (depends how tired I am after the day tomorrow) thursday I have a couple hours. I plan to be done on friday night at the latest. And yes, it will fall on you, its heavy. 6strngs, you're making this too complicated perhaps. You absolutly sure that you have tried everything to get that rear mount back in. Putting the front/ rear in first but not bolting them down..... trust me, it will wiggle in there. I've been in your position 4 or 5 times. -------------------- Teh Celica sleeps for Winter '06. I've been in your position 4 or 5 times. yes, I have tried everything. including taking a drill and trying to make the holes on the crossmember a little longer so I the two screws on the mount could slip in easier... no luck. I will be VERY careful when trying to take out the other crossmember today. I may not even take it all the way out and just loosen it up to give me a little more breathing room (which is all I really need) if nobody hears from me in 3 days, you'll know a crossmember fell on my head and I am now dead... in such a case, my celica is to be donated to... someone on here who recently totaled theirs ok... maybe that's not funny to joke about -------------------- 94 GT - Sold -------- 69 Pontiac Lemans - Sold 88 Alltrac - Sold ---- 04 WRX - Sold 00 GT-S - Sold ------ 91 Miata - project/drift car 95 GT - Sold -------- 96 GT - New Daily Drive |

ok, got the rear mount in finally!!! I had a guy that had a bunch of tools help me... well, what ended up doing was removing the two bolts that go from the bottom of the mount down through the crossmember, and in their place, we welded in two nuts so that bolts could go UP through the crossmember into the mount. after finding the exact bolt length we needed, it was relatively easy. and, should I ever have to take it back out, it will be 1000x easier to put in and take out.
anyway, now that they're in, and it's all together with the inserts. I have to say I love the way the car feels with these in! a little shaky at idle, but the rumble makes the car feel like it's more powerful than it is. I love the way that shifting feels now too. it's like you are more connected to the car it's more responsive. these are definately a great mod! I had to do the same thing. Just make sure you got really big washers on the bolt. Some people have been pulling mounts out on the older mr2's. Did you encounter the design modification on the 2001 front mount? I sure did.
