Ok, this is pissing me off.. I can't find any SOLID one place to look data on putting the e153 into a 6gc gt..

I mean.. no one has a write up (preferably with pics) on this swap?

Lots of people have done the swap and there is tons of info in this forum on it.

This is what you need to do.
Swap over the linkage from the gt4 tranny.
Swap over a electronic speed sensor if your tranny has a mechanical one.
Make hybrid axles ( st185 outers, mr2 inners from same year as tranny lsd/non lsd also)
st205 rear mount/bracket, st205 driverside mount.
mr2/st185 clutch kit (pressure plate/throwout bearing/clutch etc..)
I used the st shift cables and have not had a problem with them.

There is also a write up on steve's site on how to swap the linkage over.

My only issue is just with the mounts.. not the linkage as my trans is from a 99 v6 camry.

So an ST205 rear mount and bracket... ST205 driver side mount would be the same as an st185 i'd imagine..

Just thought I'd add a few things to Rjb's great post.

It is my understanding that if you get your E153 from a Camry/Solara you won't need to swap the linkages. However, I don't think any of them came with factory LSD so the MR2 trans may be a better option if you have the shift linkages left over from your AWD trans.

The hybrid axles will need a spacer on the passenger side between the inner and outer portions of the axle. See this topic here:

It is vital that you get the proper inner stubs. LSD and Non-LSD axles are not interchangeable without machining. See this thread at MR2OC:

Some people get by just fine with their stock shifter cables... others say they needed ST205 cables.

The st185 rear bracket will work but the mount will not. The bracket is about an 1 1/2" to 2" to the passengers side of the mount so you need the st205 mount which is off set that distance to the passengers side.

Punisher you can try the st185 driverside mount, that is what I am using but I have a custom rear. You may need to grind it a little to get it to fit in the mount on the frame I did, as it is a little to wide.

Also the passenger side is not the side that pops out of the tranny. The halfshaft bracket (carrier bearing) holds the passenger side in the tranny. The driverside if it is to short will pop out.

On my swapped e153 mount wise I used.... Front gt mount.. Top mount I had to combine both mr2 + celica mount... rear mount had to be altered from a moun I bought at advance....

I used the st185 driver side mount last night .. I had to sawzall some of that spacer out like you said.. but today I put the GT mount on instead.. I just need to drill a few holes out of the bracket plate out.

I am gonna mock that rear up now and figure out what needs to be done and then go machine it up.

Went back to the ST185 side mount because it bolts right up to the trans bracket.

Anyway, I've pretty much decided that the best way to go about the rear is to make a custom mount bracket.

The ST185 mount will bolt down to the crossmember ... However the front bolt needs a washer or spacer under it to make it level with the rear.

Tomorrow I'll make up a custom bracket and I'll snap pics of it all on.

Why not just use the GT front mount and bracket?

You can also use the st rear insulator or the gt rear insulator but it will wear out quick and you will need fill it with poly. That is why I recommend just going with the st205 rear mount and bracket, it is oem and it is made to hold up to the hp that the 3s puts out.

Why not do it right and get the 205 mount, it is the same cost as a gt mount and you don't have to do a custom mount. You just have to wait a while to get them.

I did it today... Using a GT rear mount bracket

You need to modify it slightly so that it sits to the passenger side more.. the top bracket hole needs to get bolted to the bottom mount hole on the trans..

It is hard to explain but I'll put pics up later

I am using an ST185 rear mount as well.

That is a GT rear bracket with an ST185 rear mount (insulator).

I had to move over from the hole in the bracket and then make a slotted hole.

Then cut a portion of the other bolt ear off of the bracket and weld that plate on which still needs to be trimmed slightly and then drilled.

The mount works beautifully.

I am filling all of my mounts with urethane so there shouldn't be much engine flex to begin with.. so that should work pretty well.

I should add that even the rear GT insulator could be used with this setup.. however, I don't care for the studs in the mount.. makes it a PITA for removing/installing... I may still go with the GT mount though simply because it bolts right in easier.. with the ST185 mount you need to put a spacer in the front because the way they cross member slopes upward.

I may just end up chopping the studs out of the mount and welding nuts on instead.

punisher, for the filled mounts, i would sticky with somthing thats semi-pliable, like roof flashing stuff...the black PL.
the PL poly construction adheasive (yellow) just cracks, splits, and chunks out under load.

I use 3M Super Fast Window Weld Polyurethane.

I've had great luck with it before.

Infact, on my 90 GTS (5sfe) I had a mount where the rubber was torn completely and I just filled it all in with the window weld and no issues ever since.
