In the middle of fixing oil leaks on my new car, I had to remove the dizzy. Got it all back together and now it won't start. I've tested all ignition components and here are the results: Battery was dead,Dizzy=good, wires=good, plugs=new, ignition coil .7ohm(.1 higher than recommended), and for the cap....All 4 terminals inside are crappy and I can't get a reading from them unless I touched the non-coated sides of each. And the BGB says to test the terminal in the middle of the cap, and I can't get a reading from that. Does anyone know if the st185 and st205 ignition coils are interchangeable? Has anyone had experience testing the 3s coil(I don't think .1 ohm is a huge deal)? I have a cap and rotor on order, it'll be here friday. And I'm going to check the resistor pack tonight(which could have been the reason for running rich).
What's are your thoughts? |

Coils are checked at 2 points for resistance, not one.
You still need to check the secondary winding [you checked the primary]. That slight bit more resistance could be a problem, but more than likely it's your cap..... Personally I wouldn't change the coil [At this point in time anyways. Replace that cap and go from there]. I don't know if the 2 coils share a p#, but they are more than likely interchangeable. At least temporarily. How rich is rich? I don't believe the 3rd gen normally runs as rich as the 2nd gen, but GTEs are set up to run rich.... -------------------- ![]() |

I also checked the secondary coil and it was good. I bought the car with a blitz access ecu, and it was VERY rich. Lots of black smoke. The original owner thought the ecu was didn't adjust timing????? It could be resistor pack, maybe dirty air filter, who knows. I put a stock st205 ecu in the car and once I get it started, I'll find out. Before it was so rich, the lack of power was noticable and plugs were coated with carbon.

Hm
The Blitz ECU might have been tuned for something you don't have, like larger inj. Has the engine ever run on that stock ECU? -------------------- ![]() |

It might have been stock overseas. I'll find out soon enough. It could have been tuned for something larger. The previous owner told me that the car had 850cc injectors in it, but it turns out it only had the stock 550's.

And for the resistor pack,,,,,the resistance is supposed to be 4-6 ohms. Every terminal read 6.2. If any of you 3s'ers get about 5 minutes, can you grab a reading from your resistors pack. I'm pretty sure that's enough variation to mess with the fuel.
To test the resistor pack, get a multimeter and set it to ohms,,,,put the positive node of the multimeter on the top middle terminal of the restistor pack and keep it there, test each of the other 4 terminals with the negative node of the multimeter.
