So I'm putting on new brake pads tonight (thanks LewFX and everyone else for all the info / links in the brake pads thread I started a while back - I opted for the Hawk pads) Anyway, I want to paint my calipers. My Celi is silver so I decided to go with blue accents throughout the car (none of which i have really started on yet).. dupli-color engine enamel w/ ceramic - color: ford blue DE1601 for the calipers.. What I am wondering is how long I should wait to put them back on? The label says "apply in two light coats, followed by one medium wet coat. apply all coats within one hour, allowing 10 minutes between each coat. for additional coats after one hour, wait for 7 days for pait to cure. dries to the touch in one hour. can be handled in 3 hours." Does this mean I have to wait 7 DAYS to put them back on? If so I am going to have to get a spare set to mess around with this as I dont have another car to get around. Thoughts / suggestions? Couple random side questions: Where is a good place to get a nice selection of high heat paints online / locally? How much are the gt4 calipers / are they a direct swap / where can i get some? |

why are you taking the calipers off?
just tape off where you dont want paint, and paint them right on the car. -------------------- Former Team 5SFTE pro member ;)

3 or 4 hours will be fine, heat from braking will help to accelerate the drying/curing of the paint, however try not to get the brakes TOO hott since that could burn the paint before it fully cures.
make sure you sand the calipers down smooth or wirebrush them well to remove any corrosion, then wash them down with brake cleaner to remove any oils or greases. QUOTE(presure2 @ Aug 16, 2006 - 11:36 AM) why are you taking the calipers off? just tape off where you dont want paint, and paint them right on the car. theyre ALOT easier to prep, clean, and paint off the car, also he wont have to worry about accidently kinky, twisting, or damaging the soft rubber brake line. -------------------- |

a little blue painters tape and some left over newspaper works wonders.

Paint them and leave the overnight to make sure its gone off.
I used brushed on hammerite on mine and its gone fine, but the first time I did it I had to leave my parents and come home within an hour or 2 of painting them and although it was dry to the touch it wasn't hard so it got flung around the inside of my alloy. aarrgghh. the spatter came off really easy once it had dried though, with some white spirit. |

i just finished repainting mine last week. i used the duplicolor caliper painting kit. which is basically a small can of caliper paint, some masking tape, some brake cleaner(works great), and a small brush to apply the paint. i reallylike this kit and the red i chose is a nice bright red. and since you apply it with a brush you can apply it nice and even without taking off the caliper, and getting overspray anywhere. and one kit is enough for all your calipers.
