Ok someone has mentioned this EGR thing once or twice around here. And all i can undrstand is that it has something to do with the emissions?
Could someone please explain into some detail what this is and does? |

recirculates burned exhaust back to the combustion chamber so as to lower the emissions rate of nitrous oxide

well, from the looks of those plates, they are not parts for a 3sgte egr setup. they are parts to remove and disable the egr system on usdm 3sgte's
it might bring on the cel, but you will see some power gains. btw if you have emisions in your state, that will make you fail for sure -------------------- 1994 Celica GT4 WRC Edition

Those plates are useless. Blocking off your EGR lines will not improve performance. When the engine is in low to mid throttle, exhaust gas is recirculated into the engine to lower the peak combustion temperature, however at or near full throttle, no gases are added to the intake. Those plates will not give you any increase in peak horsepower, are a waste of money, and just give your car bad NOx emissions. I have driven around in a car with an OBD2 reader hooked up and watched the digital level of the EGR valve, and when you floor it, the valve closes. This is a bogus performance improvement.

an egr is exactly what natalie described it to be. It is an emisions lowering device. For everyone with a 5s-fe open your hood and look above the air intake thingy (forgot what its called, the thing with the toyota name and stuff where the black airbox airway comes to the metal piece... yeh..) there will be a little circle thing and it should say egr valve, thats your egr. These are not included in japenese engines because well its not the law! So that is the emisions problem with the 3s-gte... The egr is required emisions equipment for any car basically above year like '74 or somethin like that. An egr cannot be added (well minus the money can get you anything phrase) because the engine basically needs to be built for it because the head needs to be molded to be fitted for an egr. The 3sgte has a mounted area for an egr but the head was not made to fit it in (this is probably because they were not totaly sure if they were gona release in the u.s. or not) so an egr can be faked... but this does not really solve the problem considering when you go to get smogged they test the egr for proper functioning. Now for the interesting part, the newer toyota vvt-i and vvtl-i engines reduced emisions so much it got rid of the use of the egr valve, therefore the 7th gen celica's do not need egr's also the beams 3s-ge does not need one either. Most of you are now thinking "Hey if I go for the beams engine it will be legal for smog because they dont require an egr" well this is somewhat true but considering it was not an optional engine for our cars the smog shop shows that our cars require an egr because they were not passed by the EPA to run without them.
Now I hope I am right with all that but please someone correct me if I am wrong. |

I believe the egr is hooked up to the header or something like that... SO!!! I believe the header might have messed you up, but definitly not the CAI

The EGR is bolted between the air intake (right after the throttle body) and the cylinder head. Headers shouldn't change it functionnality.
Maybe just take off your egr valva (2 bolts on the intake) and check if the hole isn't blocked...Deposits may gather there and jam in the hole. Thats all I can say.....There is a vaccum line also on the Egr I think. Make sure everything's fine and blablabla.... |
