i pulled a code 71 CEL and am sending it in to the mechanic to get fixed. what should be replaced first (cheapest). i've heard the EGR valves rarely go bad and that it's either the modulator or VSV. any ideas how much these are and what i should tell the mechanic? won't pass smog with the CEL on.

Check all the vacume lines, and spray some carb cleaner up in the egr valve, that fixed my 71.
Other than that just tell ur mechanic to check the egr system.
-good luck
