Slapping a turbo on a 5sfe (Auto) would for sure require a tourque converter. Anyone have any ideas? Also about the Burien kit some in here said the proper intercooler would come from I think it was an early model Supra was this correct? If you read this post and know what you are talking about please reply

A front mount MKIV Supra (2JZGTE) intercooler will work I think. I also think that the MKIII will work (one of the 7MGTE), you'l need to custom piping done for both though (I recommend an exhaust shop that does mandrel bends). Also, our cars come with a torque converter, so if yours doesn't have one well that sucks lol cuz something's wrong...but I'm guessing you mean aftermarket torque converter and yeah, if you run high boost and you shift with your automatic it would be a good idea to get an upgraded toqrue converter as well as a shift kit. Someone posted something about this and I saved the URL, but since then I have installed a new OS and lost all my favorites so if anyone has that link. It was like 800 bucks or something.
BUT, if you're only going to run 5-7psi like the kit says, don't worry about it. My recommendation is to go out and buy a car that has an engine meant for a turbo. The 5SFE is not meant to put boost on, although it can be done and very efficiently at that...it wasn't meant to be boosted on. Do a 3sgte swap. And for those fo you who have seen me everytime say "Do 5sfte if you are short on cash" exnay on that opinion. I no longer feel that you can safely boost this engine to a good horsepower without spending the same money you would on 3sgte. Then, you go and upgrade 3sgte internals and you are talking moogoo HP. yup altho a new tqc is not required, a tranny cooler, however, would be a good idea -------------------- 1994 Celica GT4 WRC Edition

LOL. The car does too run correctly. You know how many people swap out trannies in cars? What about people putting in a Turbo 350 tranny into something that wasn't meant for it all, or a total custom rod. Do those run correctly? I think so. It bolts right up too, no hassles. If you're going to swap the tranny though, why not go the whole 9 yards and switch to manual? If not, you got a few choices:
1) You could leave it stock and just add a nice tranny cooler, probably a transmission temperature guage...and you should be alright. 2) You could have the existing tranny rebuilt to higher gear ratios. This will allow you to have basically a brand new tranny, so obviously there will be substantially less power loss and you will have esentially a 4 speed semi-manual tranny if done the right way. If you send ti to the right people, which you will have to find out for yourself who those are in your area, then they can rebuild it so it feels like when going from Low (1st) to 2nd to Drive (3rd) it will feel like you're controlling the shifting. From there, if you have pedal to metal (racing situation...hopefully on the track my friend) it won't shift into the final drive gear until you hit close to redline. 3) Number 2, plus a new/rebuilt torque converter. Not necessary, but may be nice to get rid of 90% of your power loss problems if partnered with a rebuilt tranny or swapped tranny. 4) Swap in a 3s-ge transmission. This would be a cool idea. I haven't seen this done yet, because most times people swapping a 3sgte into their 5th or 6th gen Celi's will use their existing transmission or convert to AWD and use the 3sgte. It's all up to you man, there's so many choices...so don't limit yourself by saying something can't be done. Swapping in a 3s-ge transmission will probably cost just as much as rebuilding your existing one. And a torque converter, it's only advantage is less power loss. -------------------- 95 Toyota Celica GT

I do believe torque converters ONLY work with automatic transmissions. I could be wrong though.

the only thing the converter will do is flow the tranny fluid better... it will suck for daily driving, because the stall is soo high well 3400 i believe wich is way better than are 2200 stall... and theres no point on getting gears done on are auto... for 1 that would be the price of a manny swap almost.. and are auto gears arnt short, it will sit and not shift till redline in all the gears with the foot to the floor... wouldnt it bee better if we all had mannys
