Alright, well i have a few questions on what is or isn't illegal, and was kinda hoping someone would know or have any information on the subject. I live in LA, and i was just kind of wondering what mods are actually illegal.

Engine mods. I heard many different things like, ANY engine mod is illegal including a short ram intake. Can anyone add to this?

Are cars required to have mufflers? Cause mine was kind of hacked off and stolen off my car while i was away. Car now stays in my garage until i go back.

Nitrous Oxide. Is it legal to have it hooked up in your car?

RHD conversion, Legal or Illegal?

Dark window tint. what is the legal limit? i've seen some pretty dark tint on all of the windows.

Changing to an aftermarket steering wheel.

Front license plate. Are they required?

And i've always kind of wondered but is underglow completely illegal, or is it just red and blue underglow that is illegal?

Ok any help would be great, im just kind of curious about this stuff, cuase i hear it debated all the time, but i never get a clear answer.

Cali is always different but I'll give it a try...

ANY engine mod is illegal including a short ram intake. that doesnt make much sense, I don't believe it

Are cars required to have mufflers? I believe so, if not you at least need the catalytic converter for emissions purposes. if thats requred here they are most likely required in Cali

Nitrous Oxide. Is it legal to have it hooked up in your car? I don't believe it's street legal

RHD conversion, Legal or Illegal? legal. cops could care less. the issue with that is that RHD cars are imported and may not be DOT and emissions legal. and some may argue that its harder to drive on the right side of the road with a RHD. but those aren't issues with legality

Dark window tint. what is the legal limit? differs by state.

Changing to an aftermarket steering wheel. to the best of my knowledge if the car came with an airbag in the steering wheel and the aftermarket one does not it is illegal

Front license plate. Are they required? if you were issued 2 plates your required to have 2 plates. there are ways around that though. i don't have mine on. there are multiple discussions about this

And i've always kind of wondered but is underglow completely illegal, or is it just red and blue underglow that is illegal? they are not street legal. you can get fined for it

alright thanks for the input steff smile.gif, i hope im not the only one wondering about this stuff haha. I've even talked to some cops but even cops give me different answers haha. I've just been pulled over for some really stupid stuff before and so have my friends haha. I got pulled over for seating 5 people in my celica (but i guess thats understandable becuase of safety belt reasons?). But my friend got a ticket for the stock wing on his EVO, the cops said it was an obstruction of view? Um.. I got pulled over caused my license plate lights were dim, they were still on, but they were dim... Hahaa, my friend got pulled over for having a cardboard body kit on his tempo cuase they cop said it was a hazard on the road. Idk, im starting to think is that everything is illegal, as long as they can come up with an excuse to go along with it...

haha. I've had 7 people in the Celica, didn't get pulled over. 3 in the back with 1 lying accross them and 2 in the front passenger seat and the driver. All girls, the one guy drove since he was the biggest... I was in the front passenger with my friend on my lap and everytime we saw a cop she'd duck down and be luggage laugh.gif

sometimes the cops need to meet a quota on tickets and will get you for whatever they can. rolleyes.gif

It was an interesting night.

Engine mods, cali is strict on them I remember seeing some kinda training video for police where the cop had the guy driving some civic pop his hood and cited him for a rebreather something or other, and made the guy have his car inspected.

You can have neons, just cant drive with them on. "Distraction to drivers"

RHD take a look at mail carriers vehicles rhd for mailbox actions.

Tints do vary state to state, and on the analness of the officers in your area. I personally wanna get glass itself that is tinted rather than than the tint sheets.

Loud exhaust? No muffler? Watch out for those db meters disturbing the peace/noise violations are always fun times.

Airbags im not entirely sure on, but I dont think its illegal.

A lot comes down to how much of a hard time the cops want to give you.

IN WISCOSIN

Engine mods. I heard many different things like, ANY engine mod is illegal including a short ram intake. Can anyone add to this?
Engine mods are very questionable. I do not believe a short ram would get you in trouble.

Are cars required to have mufflers? Cause mine was kind of hacked off and stolen off my car while i was away. Car now stays in my garage until i go back.
Yes.

Nitrous Oxide. Is it legal to have it hooked up in your car?
Illegal

RHD conversion, Legal or Illegal?
DOT says no to this one. They have to have a certain amount of crash test ratings done on the RHD model before it can be put on the street.

Dark window tint. what is the legal limit? i've seen some pretty dark tint on all of the windows.
50% front, 35% rear, no mirrored

Changing to an aftermarket steering wheel.
Yes, can't remove safety equipment.

Front license plate. Are they required?
Yes.

And i've always kind of wondered but is underglow completely illegal, or is it just red and blue underglow that is illegal?
Illegal. You may get pegged for impersonating an officer with red/blue as well.

Remember, this are WI laws.
If you have an further questions PM me.

Okay, I'm soo not moving back to Cali.

Nobody gives a rats @$$ here...the cops will actually see a nice car, pull it over, and ask if they can look undre the hood to ADMIRE any engine work you've done! lmao...

The law says 35% tint or higher required all around, and no vinyl graphics on the top of the windsheild...but you don't get pulled over for it, they "catch you" at the yearly inspection...if you actually get your car inspected rolleyes.gif

No laws against any lights, color changes, neons, windsheild squirters, nothing. I remember that noise law in Cali. That sucked...no worries here, though. smile.gif

yeah nothing like being proud of poor laws and law enforcement.

people make those laws for a reason, they don't just hate modders.

I think they're still considered factory stuff. Just like the good ol' super charger for the Mini S.

They make them for a reason: depending on where you live, they are different, because each state has had a different experience with mods and makes laws accordingly. Finicky people who want absolute silence in California result in the "no louder than can be heard 50 feet away" law, confused people seeing red or blue neons cause accidents when slowing down too quickly on the freeway, etc. etc...

We haven't had those problems here. I'm spoiled by being allowed to do almost anyhting I want with my car, so sue me, but please don't tell me that where I live has "poor laws and law enforcement" just because they aren't the same as yours. People who live here have more of a "party attitude" about life, are more laid-back, don't mind modified cars on the road and if anything, enjoy them. Police openly admit that the few car mod laws we have were mostly just copied off of other state's laws to make our force some money. Mods have not caused problems yet, when they do, then I'm sure new laws like yours will come around and be respected, because the small community watches out for eachother and respects everyone's wants.

I suppose you can remove seatbelts and safety equipment huh? Or lower your car 1" from the ground so you can kill someone else when you hit debris. Or so your strobe lights can trigger someones epilepsy and they have a seizure, swerve and kill someone. Or someone is too busy looking at the pretty neon on the car, swerves off the road and kills a four year old playing in a park. Also, nothing like having a LOUD exhaust wake you up at 4am. I suppose you are all passed out drunk from your "party attitude" so you don't hear it. Severe modding is stupid for on-road, daily driver use.

Like I said, hasn't been a problem, nobody's been that dumb. If it ever becomes a problem, I'm sure it will be addressed. Dang. Eng of thread-jacking (sorry guys).
