When I first start the car and give it some gas the car sounds like a gurgling terd. Once it warms up it is much less noticeable. Sounds almost like a little marble bouncing around by the exhaust manifold with a bit of a sputtering sound. It only does it when it is in gear not when you rev the motor.

Anyone have any idea what needs to be replaced? CAT or manifold?

Maybe u need a new spark plug..check to see

could be a crack in the cast iron manifold. the 7afe cast manifold is known to crack, usually between 3/4 or 1/2.

Neither, before you replace expensive stuff, I'd start with a tune-up, new spark plugs, wires, and O2 sensors.

Neither, before you replace expensive stuff, I'd start with a tune-up, new spark plugs, wires, and O2 sensors.


Actually it has a new cap rotor, plugs, wires, and I put a new O2 sensor in about 2 months ago (had a cell light). It was the 2nd sensor that is at the bottom by the firewall. What I PITA that was! Had to cut the old one off to get at the stripped bolts. Right by the O2 sensor on the exhaust pipe there is this little mesh tubepiece. It kept poking me. What is that? It sure looked beat to hell. The car is a 95. I thought it only had one O2 sensor? Does that mean it is a California emissions car?

It does not seem to effect the performance of the car. It idles pretty good. Just sounds really bad.

It kinda sounds like the problem I had a couple years ago. I thought it may have been my valves, but I don't know what the exact problem was because I ended up having the entire motor built from the ground up.

Well if it had a tune-up recently, it's more than likely the exhaust system. Maybe you could use a gel-like liquid that bubbles up, to find the leak?

2 O2 sensors could be a Cali-spec car.

all USDM STs have 2 02 sensors, they are all cali-spec.

What about the fact that the noise stops after I drive it for a while. Once I get off the freeway on the way to work (about 35 miles), when I take off from a stop it is almost unnoticeable. Let the car sit for a couple of hours then it sounds like crap again.

I have noticed that when I had an exhaust leak too. My guess is that when the exhaust system heats up, it expands, closing the leak.

Soon though the damage will worsen.

I second this. I bought my car and then found the leak. It could also be the flex pipe.( the little mesh tube piece) Those are bad about leaking that could be caused by bad front or rear engine mounts. It is supposed to flex a little but if your mounts are worn then it is flexing it any time you change gears or accelerate.
Easy way to check these is to: for the manifold just remove the heat shield and inspect it, for the flex pipe you need to jack the car up and feel around it while the car is running.
Good luck and ask more questions if you have any.

If it were sounding more like a rasping/light rattling sound, then I would agree with bindertch on the flezpipe issue. When I first got my gt it was making a sound like that. Replaced the flex-pipe and no more bad sounds.

Maybe it is the flex pipe then. I remember checking it out when I changed the O2 sensor. It looked pretty knarled up. It was so frayed up that it kept poking my hand.

What is the part # and do I need to order it from Toyota? How do you remove and install?

You will probably only be able to order the whole bottom end pipe. It might cost less to just have an exhaust shop put one in. I just looked and it isn't cheap but it is a bolt in part.

you can get a flex section welded in at just about any muffler shop.

Hammer punch the muffler and see if you hear anything rattling around... toasted cats tend to chill in the muffler
