Well my engine has a knock to it. It only knocks whenever I turn it on and it hasn't been running for a while, and when I'm hitting around 4k RPM. It also does this a little whenever I'm in second gear(automatic tranny) around 3.5k RPM and I'm letting of the throttle. It doesn't knock during idle, or as loud. Does anybody have any ideas? The knocking is coming from where the valve cover is and I want to just take it off and see what I find but I'm a little short on money, so your help is appreciated.

I try to keep more on the full side but I'm pretty sure it's okay I'll double check that.

What does anybody now about valve lash. I was reading in the book that you should have your valve shims checked and adjusted. What is the price range for that and what is exactly done. Can this cause knocking or is there anything esle that could cause this.
My timing is fine and I don't think it's that.

valve timing, valve lash, and ignition timing are all different things.

valve lash is the slack between the lifter, valve stem, and the cam lobe. they measure the gap and shim accordingly, you can DIY but you need a couple special tools.

valves normally tick and tap, but they don't knock.

bad valve tap can get pretty noisy and can be confused with knocking. i've heard some noisy valve trains and if you didnt know it was the valves you'd think they had spun a cam bearing.

My ST has about the exact same problem, however my sources say piston. With my car, if it was a valve that would be one noisy valve. I've limped my ST around like that for about 35k now, and it gets a little worse as time goes on. I'd say put Mobil1 in that bad boy and dont worry for at least 20k unless she starts knocking real bad. Toyota motors are tough.

do you mean knock as in detonation? cuz you could just buy higher octane fuel or get some octane booster additive.

No my oil light isn't on.

The ticking or tapping is around 4k rpm, it is definitely a knock when I first turn it on but it only knocks about 7 times and quits.

I added more oil and I don't really here the tapping but it still knocks whenever I turn it on.
