Turbo question, i run a pretty stock 96 celica ST so this isn't for me but a general question for a friend that just got himself an Evo (damn its nice). Anyways, with a new greddy type rs blowoff valve installed, what else must be installed to get that "whoosh" sound everyone is so fond of? I hear it needs an open element style air filter? However it looks that the Evo has a cold air intake stock, so is this referring to the turbo intake? I think this question is pretty general for all types of cars but if i'm wrong please let me know. Just what does he need to get the "whoosh"?

he needs to vent the blow off valve to atmosphere to get the sound. cars without the "pshh" sound are probably routing it back into the intake. thus it is muffled.

it is re-circulating to the intake but we can't hear any difference, does it really muffle it that much?

yes.
with it recirculated, you will barely hear it, if at all.

before he changes the set-up, consider the advantages of recirculation. I mean the sound is cool, but there is a reason why is recirculated.

yeah i told him that recirc is the best setup for the car and hes going to add a new intake and conical filter which is supposed to make the BOV noticeable but not attention grabbing from 10 blocks away, thanks for the help!
