Well I took my car for a trip, and probably the last. My engine starting knocking really bad. Before it was a tap, now it is definitely a hard knock. It sounds really bad. It is coming from around the valve cover but then again it is sort of from the middle of the engine, hard to tell. I just need some thought on what it might be not exact. So I can kind of get an estimate of how much this is going to cost to fix. Hopefully I don't need a new engine, it would be nice, but I don't have the money right now.
thanks in advance |

the clunking increases with an increase in rpm? drop the oil pan and take off the rod caps, see whats going on in there.

i'm willing to bet its a spun bearing. how sure are you that your oil wasnt low prior to this? i mean if it was full last month, then its possible you have an oil leak you dont know about and it got low and then bam spun the bearing, and thats why it was low after the bearing spun. check around the engine for oily sludgy stuff, i bet you had a leak you didnt know about.

I agree, definately sounds like a rod bearing. I've heard that sound a few too many times. I'm willing to bet its prolly on number 1 rod cuz that seems to be the first to go but make sure to check all bearings.

Alright guys I'm back. I changed out the rod bearings...#4 was smashed kinda like stretched thin. 1,2,3 were fine but I changed them any way. Well I still have almost the same problem the knocking isn't as bad but it is still knocking. Could it be the valves or something to do with the valves? Any body have any experience with knocking and how did you fix it?
Thanks Again This post has been edited by 94st_santos: Nov 15, 2006 - 11:19 PM |

Is it knocking or clicking? Clicking is just the valves and their general wear and tear. happens to almost every engine. They just need to be reseated. And many guys go without ever even doing that, because well, its just that common and not that big of a problem.

Well I aligned the cam and it helped. The tapping I had before my car messed up and during is now gone. It is really quite during idle. Sadly the hard knock isn't gone, it still knocks when I press on the gas. Tomorrow I'm going to check the vavles and see if that's the problem.
So close.. |

Well turns out the problem is still the rod bearing. Since running it with the smashed bearing, I think it ate down on the crankshaft and it still leaves a gap to knock. Does anybody know where I can get it grinded down?

QUOTE(94st_santos @ Nov 19, 2006 - 10:21 PM) Well turns out the problem is still the rod bearing. Since running it with the smashed bearing, I think it ate down on the crankshaft and it still leaves a gap to knock. Does anybody know where I can get it grinded down? Ask for a reputable machine shop in your area that can turn the crank and allow for a larger bearing to be used. Most circle track or drag strip enthusists know who does the best work.
