In a surprising turn of events, the world champion St. Louis Cardinals tendered an offer to Chicago Cubs manager Dusty Baker to become manager of the Cardinals. After considering the higher salary and other benefits, Baker turned down the offer indicating that the Cardinals' season was too long.
