i have a passport escort one, its one of the best out there. i used it fora long time, and started to notice that it always goes off in the smae spots....they pick up more than jsut cop radar, it picks up any type of strong frequency. i got sick of it....however it deffinatley tells you when a cop si around

This is whats excellent about the V1. In areas that you know theres something giving you a false alarm, cops can also know this, and sit in places you think theres nothing and they nab you. The V1 shows how many different signals its picking up, so in an area which you kno is false and it shows 2, its likely a cop is there too. V1 def. worth the extra few bucks.

yeah, the v1 is a great detector. if you can afford one, go for it. if that's out of the range you were expecting to pay, just get a cheap one. and i mean cheap. the cheapest you can find. there are a few 10-12 band detectors out there for 100-150 bucks, just don't get one of those. there are actually only 3 or 4 bands that police use, and an inexpensive 6 or 7 band detector will cover those.

the biggest thing is pop-up protection. nothing short of a valentine or top of the line passport will offer any coverage for pop, and they only work on the principle that their extended range will detect a car ahead of you getting clocked, and without anyone in front of you...as soon as it's going off you're already done.

if you're not going to get a $300 unit, you're not getting any pop protection, and everything is pretty much equal. hence my suggestion that you just get an inexpensive one seeing as a midrange one really won't do anything extra for you.

btw, detectors are legal but "frowned upon" in most jurisdictions...scramblers and jammers are not legal, as far as i know.

heres the thing with pop, its unreliable. I dont know how many departments use it, however here the staties use Ka & Laser, and the county sherriffs use K. I have the V1 1.7 so I dont have pop.

i think cali is pop.

in truth, detectors aren't going to do much if the situation is wrong. no matter what you get, they're always one step ahead.

good discussion. people should know!

as far as I know they are only illegal in Virginia and D.C. [and I think there may be one other around the same area]

I have a Whistler Pro73 and its pretty good for only $120. I looked it up and it was supposed to be the best in its price range [at the time anyway]. just don't rely on any radar detector too much because thats when you get caught, it won't help if you don't know or are doing way over the speed limit.

I want one of these as well. I know if I had one I would go just way to fast though. I've never got a ticket in the Celica. I run, and I'm not ashamed of it. One day they'll catch me, but it will take more than 2 of them. I just have a cheap Cobra unit. But it works well enough for me. You get use to it, and know how to read it. It's not a save all. It beeps, you break. People I know with them hear them beep and think it's just a false alarm all the time, then it's too late. My point, jammers are the best, but if you get a radar detector you have to know how to read it or it's useless.

pop radar isnt a specific band or signal, its just a regular k or ka band... it is basically where the detector is only on for a specific car, as opposed to holding it on to scan several... typically on highways and night time freeways, you'll see a lot of cops using the "pop" style of detection... the reason why the more high end detectors can pick it up is because of the fact that they can pick up weak signals from far away... for the best bang for the buck, picks up the escort passport 8500, for the best over all, get the valentine

oh and if u do have one and you still get pulled over, do your best to hide it before the op sees it, cause that would just evoke the ass hole in the cop when he approaches you

I have the Escort Passport 8500 X50 or whatever, cost me about 250 got it around june. It works really well, yeah you get some false alarms (like when your close to a best buy or any store that uses electronic doors) but you get used to it.

Like everybody else said, dont rely on just the detector otherwise you'll get caught, mine has started beeping a good minute or two before seeing a cop acouple turns and dips ahead when he was using his gun constantly. However, many times i've driven by cops that are just sitting using either the pop or laser, and no matter what you have, you're screwed because they already got you.

Anyways, the escort is a good buy, but like everybody said here, don't rely on it 100%, it is nice to have tho.
