I was driving for around for 5mins, then the engine check light came on. After shutting the car off for about 3-4 hrs the light went away. Any suggestions whats going on? BTW its a 94 Celica.

read the code. connect e1 and te1 in the diagnostic connector then count the sequence the check engine light blinks. It should blink a number of times, then pause a sec, then blink another number of times. for example, if it were code 54, it would blink blink blink blink blink-pause-blink blink blink blink. five times then four times would be code 54. find out the code then read in your service manual what the code is. or if you dont have a service manual find out from someone who has it. its prob on the internet somewhere. I only have the codes for a 88-89 and 94-98 3sgte, (some might be the same) then once you know the fault you can begin to troubleshoot it. most of the time it is a defective component. on rare occasions it is wiring or a bad ecu

the ECU stored the code, the problem could still there but just not showing or gone. It could of just been a loose connection or an eratic change in driving style. You could reset the ECU (pull the ECU fuse in the bay (or the neg battery terminal) and wait 30 sec, then reconnect) and check to see if the CEL pops up again.

cwm13.gif its better to know what the code is before you clear it. its not like its hard. it will just help you to look for symptoms related to the fault code. And that way your not wondering what the cods was. connect a peice of wire and watch a light flash..

^that was explaining why the CEL may have gone off and what to do to try and get it back on to see if the problem still exists, not saying anything about clearing it.

the ECU stores the fault code. find out what it is then go from there.

did u get gas b4 it came on? If it went away it could have just been a small EVAP system leak-gas cap or something- those tend to reset themselves smile.gif
