Ok so i think its called a CV boot. Well anyways the boots that cover the axles on both my right and left front are dry-rotted. I was told by a mechanic that I might as well just replace the axle since it has dirt in it? Is he pulling my chain, should I replace the whole axle, or just get new cv boots?

I would go ahead and replace the axle like your mechanic said. The dirt and grim that has gotten into the joint has probably done some damage. Replacing an axle is no real problem,I would do it as soon as possible though because you don't want that axle to go out on you while you're out somewhere. It could be a dangerous situation if left alone for too long.

Agreed replace the whole thing. If you are lucky enough to catch it before the boot goes, they can be replaced. CV joints are extremely durable IF no dirt get into them. I need to get mine done before the winter and my mech said 1-2 hours labour per side and the boots are ussually pretty cheap.
