anyone seen this yet:

http://my.break.com/media/view.aspx?ContentID=183837

the student was kinda asking for it.. but i think the cops kinda overdid tasing the guy 5+ times (and then threatening to tase the people that asked for their badge # to complain)

Its kinda hard to tell cause we dont see the begining, but my guess is he didnt have an id, they asked him to leave, he probly is a student so he felt he had a right to be there, but the cops are supposed to expell anyone in the facilities without an id for security reasons. Then arguement ensues and he starts to get loud and resisting the cops escorting him out.... then thats where the camera begins to record. I honestly dont think cops are gonna bust into a crowded library and start tasing someone off the bat. I dont support the cops behavior though, i dont think you need to tase one small ass dude 6 times to get him out. But at the same time, if i hear the words "STAND UP" again im gonna hit someone. they must have said that like 200 times during the video and probably another 100 before. They guy should have listened and they could have straightend things outside, BEFORE they began tasing him. kindasad.gif

Its a crazy video though, when the crowd gets all rowled up, it reminds me of V for Vendetta when the cop shoots the girl and the public takes matters into their own hands

I don't know about you guys but when a cop tells you to do something you should do it. this guy deserved what he got. you can clearly hear them telling him to stand up stand up stand up or you'll get tazed again and him saying "f you" etc.

YES! thank you! I totally agree, if you don't respond to police orders you deserve to be tased, he was acting like an idiot and fully deserved what he got.

The Daily Bruin wrote:
QUOTE
UCPD officers shot a student several times with a Taser inside the Powell Library CLICC computer lab late Tuesday night before taking him into custody.

No university police officers were available to comment further about the incident as of 3 a.m. Wednesday, and no Community Service Officers who were on duty at the time could be reached.

At around 11:30 p.m., CSOs asked a male student using a computer in the back of the room to leave when he was unable to produce a BruinCard during a random check. The student did not exit the building immediately.

The CSOs left, returning minutes later, and police officers arrived to escort the student out. By this time the student had begun to walk toward the door with his backpack when an officer approached him and grabbed his arm, at which point the student told the officer to let him go. A second officer then approached the student as well.

The student began to yell "get off me," repeating himself several times.

It was at this point that the officers shot the student with a Taser for the first time, causing him to fall to the floor and cry out in pain. The student also told the officers he had a medical condition.

UCPD officers confirmed that the man involved in the incident was a student, but did not give a name or any additional information about his identity.

Video shot from a student's camera phone captured the student yelling, "Here's your Patriot Act, here's your ****ing abuse of power," while he struggled with the officers.

As the student was screaming, UCPD officers repeatedly told him to stand up and said "stop fighting us." The student did not stand up as the officers requested and they shot him with the Taser at least once more.

"It was the most disgusting and vile act I had ever seen in my life," said David Remesnitsky, a 2006 UCLA alumnus who witnessed the incident.

As the student and the officers were struggling, bystanders repeatedly asked the police officers to stop, and at one point officers told the gathered crowd to stand back and threatened to use a Taser on anyone who got too close.

Laila Gordy, a fourth-year economics student who was present in the library during the incident, said police officers threatened to shoot her with a Taser when she asked an officer for his name and his badge number.

Gordy was visibly upset by the incident and said other students were also disturbed.

"It's a shock that something like this can happen at UCLA," she said. "It was unnecessary what they did."

Immediately after the incident, several students began to contact local news outlets, informing them of the incident, and Remesnitsky wrote an e-mail to Interim Chancellor Norman Abrams.

Absolutely not. 2 men can easily carry that guy out or drag him out. You do NOT deserve to be harmed if you are not exhibiting any form of a threat or violence. He was not resisting he was not threatening. This was excessive force.

I'm not sure but I think if I just got shocked with a taser I wouldn't feel like standing up either.

agreed he shouldn't have started screaming in the first place and maybe deserved one of those shocks, but not the following 3 or 4

I wouldn't say that 2 men could easily carry someone out, it is very hard to deal with someone who is struggling, however I acknowledge that there were 3 cops (I think)

Anyway, I think the main section of video that we need to judge wheather or not tazing was nessecary was the first bit, who knows maybe this guy tried to run or tried to reach for the tazer or something, but all speculation aside I agree with it mainly on the basis that the suspect was given clear orders to "stand up or you will be tazed" which he disobeyed and responded "f*ck you". I don't think people like him deserve to be treated like everyone else, if you are going to be an idiot I think you should get tazed, as long as you're given clear warnings..

I can see why the force used was a little over the top, but I think the fact that the guy was acting like a total idiot warranted a tazing, I mean seriously, you don't talk to authority figures like that, that's just my opinion

He wasnt struggling. Thats the whole point. There are students watching who said the guy (who was Muslim BTW) was saying "I'm leaving, I'm leaving..."

i heard that getting tased was as painful as getting kicked in the balls... and that it takes 5-15min to recover from a tase depending on voltage?

and i dunno... being treated like that by the cops... i would think most people would start to act like an ass too...

That isn't the point though. he is clearly resisting. you might want to look up the definition. is it a little excessive, maybe. is it within what i expect police to do, yes. i think every american should have to deal with the police in a foreign country before bitching and moaning about ours. if this guy was in germany he would be a bloody pulp and anyone who has had an experience with police in a foreign country will agree.

This has nothing to do with foreign police. I dont care what they do in foreign countries. And you show me where he's "clearly resisting." Do you mean where he's on the ground after being tazed or him being limp?

recovery from being tased is almost instantanious

passive resistance is still resistance, but this is way out of line.

that being said, i think this is completely & totally bull****, those cops should be suspended or fired for abusing their power. you don't randomly taze people just because you feel like it. he was just some kid in a library who didn't have an ID, and he was leaving.

this isn't some cracked out gangster high on PCP swinging a lead pipe around, it's some college kid in a fairly decent school. why this was done is beyond me, they could've just cuffed him & escorted him out.

these stupid cops want to play with their toys, is what it is. our rights as citizens are slowly circling the drain, this is why i own a hand gun, and am prepared to use it if i feel my life is in jeopardy by anybody, at any time.

yeah, but we aren't foreign country. i understand what you're saying, and it's a decent comparison. however, as citizens, we're granted certain constitutional rights. some of these foreign countries you speak of (russia, etc) don't have the same rights we supposedly do.

if this happened to you, you'd be screaming for blood. think about it.

you're at your friends house
cop walks in, demands ID's from everyone, you left yours in the car.
you decide to leave, cop tazers you four times, even after you're on the ground screaming.

it's a pretty ****ed up situation, no matter what country you're in.

Using a similar analogy, you don't go to a ballgame and forget your tickets in the car and try to fight your way in. You and I both know what the police are bringing to you if you do, an ass kicking.
